BASEBALL: Austin Wells lifts Bishop Gorman to win in Lions Tournament

Austin Wells was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead Bishop Gorman’s baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Elk Grove (California) on Monday in the Lions Tournament in El Cajon, California.

Ryan Sepede added a two-run home run for the Gaels, who scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie.

Jorel Hingada singled home Nick Israel for a 4-3 lead, and Wells singled home Hingada for the final margin.

Parker Aquino allowed three runs on seven hits in 6⅔ innings to pick up the win. He struck out 11 with one walk. Nick Hernandez got the final out to record a save.

Green Valley 3, Grossmont (Calif.) 0 — At La Mesa, California, Frankie Fitzgerald and Joe DiGiacomo combined on a six-hit shutout as the Gators beat the Foothillers in the Lions Tournament.

Fitzgerald started and got the win. He allowed five hits and struck out seven in five shutout innings. DiGiacomo pitched two scoreless frames to get the save.

Drake Maningo was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, and Matt Uran was 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run for Green Valley.

Jake Empey went 2-for-3 for the Gators, and teammate Carter Gehlken hit a solo homer.

San Marcos (Calif.) 8, Desert Oasis 5 — At San Marcos, California, the Knights scored five runs in the top of the seventh to knock off the Diamondbacks in the Lions Tournament.

Jason Sharmon was 2-for-3 with a double, and Cole Schaefer had a double and three RBIs for Desert Oasis.

Del Norte (Calif.) 11, Foothill 8 — At San Diego, James Lafferty went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run to help the Nighthawks top the Falcons in the Lions Tournament.

Anthony Pannullo was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs for Foothill, which made six errors and allowed 10 unearned runs.

Chayse Parenteau was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Falcons.

La Jolla Country Day (Calif.) 4, Silverado 1 — At La Jolla, California, Josh Howe homered, and A.J. Dhus threw a four-hitter as the Torreys beat the Skyhawks in the Lions Tournament.

Payton Ballard and Thomas Keller each had a double for Silverado.

Orange Glen (Calif.) 4, Sunrise Mountain 2 — At Escondido, California, Memo Ibarra threw a six-hitter to lead the Patriots over the Miners in the Lions Tournament.

Eddie Casado was 2-for-3 for Sunrise Mountain.

Legacy 6, Boulder City 5 — At Spring Valley, the Longhorns rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to top the Eagles.

Fabian Torres and Anthony Lomeli started the inning with consecutive singles. After a sacrifice bunt, consecutive ground balls scored both runs to give Legacy the lead.

Donte Williams was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run, and Jordan Crawford went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Longhorns.

Willie Valdez-Grijalva allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of relief to pick up the win.

Kodey Rah went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Boulder City.

Spring Valley 11, Legacy 1 — At Spring Valley, Jonathan Bakken went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs to help the Grizzlies to the six-inning win over the Longhorns in the Grizzly Invitational.

Bryce Bullock was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Spring Valley.

Nick Rupp went the distance to get the win. He allowed an unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts.

Spring Valley 16, Boulder City 0 — At Spring Valley, Jaxson Otis went 3-for-3 with a triple, a home run and five RBIs to help the Grizzlies to the five-inning win in the Grizzly Invitational.

Bakken went 2-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs for Spring Valley, and Bullock was 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Kade Higgins went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Spring Valley. Bullock tossed a four-hitter with three strikeouts to get the win.

Bonanza 6, Moapa Valley 3 — At Bonanza, Julian DeLeon allowed a run on two hits in five innings to lead the Bengals over the Pirates in the Grizzly Invitational.

DeLeon struck out six and walked four.

Torren Brozovich had a double and an RBI, and Nick DeSoto was 1-for-2 with two runs for Bonanza, which used a three-run sixth inning to pull away.

Dayton Wolfley was 2-for-2 with a double and a run for Moapa Valley.

Mission Viejo (Calif.) 6, Basic 4 — At Fullerton, California, Joey Garman went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Diablos over the Wolves in the National Classic.

Basic’s Garrett Giles was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Nick Thompson went 2-for-4 with a double and a run for the Wolves.

Vista (Calif.) 12, Liberty 5 — At Vista, California, the Patriots gave up eight runs in the fourth inning in their loss to the Panthers in the Lions Tournament.

Kevin Clark hit two doubles, and Jacob Rogers and Jordan Moreno each added a double for Liberty.

Bishop Amat (Calif.) 5, Coronado 1 — At Fullerton, California, the Lancers scored three runs in the first inning before downing the Cougars in the National Classic.
