BASEBALL: Basic uses two-run fifth inning to beat Spring Valley

Basic’s baseball team strung together its only three hits of the game to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth in a 2-1 home win over Spring Valley on Thursday.

The Grizzlies took the lead on Michael Macove’s solo homer in the top of the fourth.

But Josh McLean led off the fifth with a single and came around to score the tying run on a single by Mikey York.

York scored on Taylor Ferdinand’s RBI single.

Tanner Roundy went the distance, allowing four hits and striking out three to get the win.

Macove went 2-for-3, and losing pitcher Nick Melinchok went the distance, allowing three hits and striking out five.

Green Valley 6, Liberty 2 — At Liberty, Keola Paragas tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven with no walks to lead the Gators to a win over the Patriots.

Cody Milner provided a two-run double, and Ty Burger was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Green Valley. Jarrett Perns, Troy Cropper and Anthony Hatch each added two hits for the Gators.

Nick Rush had two hits for Liberty.

Silverado 5, Centennial 0 — At Centennial, freshman Kevin Pindel threw a five-hitter as the Skyhawks blanked the Bulldogs.

Nick Kawano was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI, and teammate Jordan Thompson went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Silverado, which plated four runs in the top of the second.

Tanner Wright was 2-for-3 for Centennial.

Rancho 10, Arbor View 0 — At Arbor View, Josh Mill threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to guide the Rams to a five-inning victory over the Aggies.

Braulio Santiaguin belted a two-run triple to key a nine-run fifth inning for Rancho, which got an RBI double from Jose Verdugo. Cody Suarez and Dylan Pletsch each had two hits for the Rams.

Jayce Gardner provided Arbor View’s lone hit.

Bonanza 7, Eldorado 3 — At Eldorado, Alec Taft went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBIs to lift the Bengals over the Sundevils.

Cruz Nevarez had three stolen bases and three runs for Bonanza, which used a four-run fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

Matthew Montano struck out six in four innings of relief to earn the win for the Bengals.

Trevor Swain had two RBIs for Eldorado.

Bishop Gorman 5, Liberty Christian (Texas) 3 — At Phoenix, Cadyn Grenier and Austin Cram each had two hits as the Gaels held on for the win in the Coach Bob Invitational.

Grenier had a double and an RBI for Gorman, which scored three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

Matt Mitchell allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings to get the win, and Alex Tisminezky threw two hitless innings to get the save.

O’Connor (Ariz.) 6, Bishop Gorman 5 — At Phoenix, Cameron Ming’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh gave O’Connor the win over the Gaels in the Coach Bob Invitatinoal.

O’Connor rallied for two runs in the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh.

Bronson Bowe had an RBI double for Gorman.

Faith Lutheran 10, Boulder City 4 — At Faith Lutheran, the Crusaders broke open the game with a six-run third inning en route to the win over the Eagles.

Logan Etherington went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI to lead Faith Lutheran. Justin Daraban was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Erich Uelmen added a three-run triple for the Crusaders.

Tech 19, Western 4 — At Western, Abel Martinez went 3-for-4 with three doubles, four runs and three RBIs to help the Roadrunners to the five-inning win over Western.

Jayce Otis went 2-for-3 with four runs and two RBIs, and Bryan Casas was 2-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs for Tech, which scored 12 runs in the fourth.

Mojave 10, Sunrise Mountain 3 — At Sunrise Mountain, Alex Smith went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, and the Rattlers used a seven-run third inning to down the Miners.

Scotty Wilson went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for Mojave.

Winning pitcher Ryan Lawrence tossed a five-hitter and struck out 10.
