BASEBALL: Powell helps keep Bulldogs’ playoff hopes alive

Cooper Powell pitched a complete game and drove in a run, and the Centennial baseball team kept its postseason hopes alive by knocking off visiting Cimarron-Memorial 2-1 on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-4 in the Southwest League and are tied with Bonanza for fourth place with three league games remaining.

Cimarron, which dropped one game behind first-place Bishop Gorman, threatened in the seventh inning.

Nick Borowski cut Centennial’s lead to 2-1 with a run-scoring single before Nico Decolati reached on an error, putting runners on first and third for the Spartans. However, Powell got Jayson Hicks to ground out to end the game.

Porter Rosenkrantz went 2-for-3 with a double and scored the eventual winning run in the fourth inning on a dropped third strike. Powell gave Centennial a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring single in the third inning.

Ricky Koplow doubled, and Will Loucks and James Harbour each tripled for the Bulldogs.

Powell gave up six hits and struck out one to earn the victory.

Borowski finished 2-for-3, and Josh Nuernberg had a double for Cimarron. Spartans starter Tanner McAninch went the distance, allowing eight hits and striking out five.

Desert Oasis 4, Bonanza 3 — At Desert Oasis, Chase Adams drove in the winning run with a two-out single as the Diamondbacks scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to shock the Bengals in a Southwest League game.

Desert Oasis tied the game at 3 on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Alex Tafesh.

Sean DeSoto went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Travis Ming supplied two hits and an RBI for Bonanza.

Cody Schmidt had a double for Desert Oasis.

Bishop Gorman 4, Legacy 2 — At Legacy, Jack Little tossed a six-hitter, and the Gaels slipped past the Longhorns in a Southwest League game.

Kai Domingo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Cadyn Grenier went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Gorman.

Michael Blasko and Kenny Meimerstorf each doubled for the Gaels.

Quentin McCray and Kyle Peeler tripled for Legacy.

Basic 18, Del Sol 4 — At Basic, Mikey York went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs, and Ryan Blatnik was 3-for-4 as the Wolves defeated the Dragons in five innings in a Southeast League game.

York, who was also the winning pitcher, doubled, tripled and scored four runs.

Andrew Church was 2-for-3 with a double for Basic. Teammate Hunter Robinson was 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Tyler Long added a triple for the Wolves, who scored 10 runs in the first inning.

Michael DeLeon was 2-for-2 with a double, and Brandon Hubbs finished 2-for-3 for Del Sol.

Foothill 13, Eldorado 2 — At Foothill, Collin Dobrolecki and Zack Avery each doubled and drove in two runs, and the Falcons beat the Sundevils in a five-inning Southeast League game.

Nick Cardinale gave up two runs and two hits and struck out seven in four innings for Foothill.

Mike Brown and Miguel Sanchez each had an RBI for Eldorado.

Boulder City 9, Desert Pines 4 — At Desert Pines, Corbett Fleming was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and D.J. Koopman pitched a complete game in the Eagles’ Division I-A victory over the Jaguars.

Tanner Howell finished 2-for-4 with a double for Boulder City.

Juan Cruz drove in two runs for Desert Pines.

Moapa Valley 10, Virgin Valley 0 — At Overton, Josh Repp tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk to lead the Pirates by the Bulldogs in five innings in a Division I-A game.

Kasen Hughes went 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs and four RBIs, and Landon Willard was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Moapa Valley.

Chaparral 12, Sunrise Mountain 2 — At Chaparral, winning pitcher Zach Harman went 2-for-2 with three stolen bases and three runs, and batterymate Eduardo Jimenez was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs as the Cowboys beat the Miners in five innings in a Division I-A game.

Luis Giro had a double, an RBI and scored a run, and Chad Clark stroked a triple for Chaparral.
