BASEBALL: Wulff leads Gaels to tournament title

Brandon Wulff had two hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs to help Bishop Gorman’s baseball team to a 5-1 victory over host Tucson (Ariz.) in the championship game of the Chris Moon Cherry Field Classic on Friday.

Cadyn Grenier and Daniel Edson each added two hits for the Gaels, who scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Alex Perron allowed three hits and one run while striking out eight in six innings for Gorman. Zach Grech came on after Tucson’s leadoff batter reached in the top of the seventh and recorded three strikeouts.

Spring Valley 5, Clark 3 — At Spring Valley, Jake Sellinger went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to push the Grizzlies over the Chargers.

Carter Lambeth was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and teammate Shayne Watkins went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Spring Valley.

Nick Rupp threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts to get the win.

Rancho 2, North Medford (Ore.) 0 — At Rancho, four pitchers combined on a five-hitter yet faced only one batter more than the minimum as the Rams blanked the Black Tornado.

Anthony Becerra, Jaeger McDowell, Robert Spinelli and Carlos Hernandez also combined to strike out nine of the 22 hitters they faced.

Zach Barnhart had an RBI double in the first inning, and Angel Walker added a solo homer in the fourth for Rancho.

Desert Oasis 5, Durango 0 — At Desert Oasis, Chris Van Kuren threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts to lead the Diamondbacks over the Trailblazers.

Nic Lane went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Desert Oasis, and Van Kuren was 2-for-3.

Silverado 6, Foothill 2 — At Silverado, James Skelly scattered eight hits and struck out five to help the Skyhawks top the Falcons.

Payton Ballard, Kevin Pindel, Mitchell Ballard and Alex Grafiada each went 2-for-3 for Silverado, which took control with a five-run fourth inning.

Jordan Fredericksen was 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for Foothill.

Canyon Springs 5, Filer (Idaho) 3 — At Canyon Springs, Carlos Alcala doubled and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth to help the Pioneers top the Wildcats.

Canyon Springs led 3-0 going into the sixth, but Filer scored three runs in the top of the inning to tie the game.

Alcala led off the bottom of the inning with a double, and Trevor Berekmeyer bunted to third. The throw to first was high, and Alcala scored on the play for a 4-3 lead.

Berekmeyer came around to score on a pinch-hit single by Johnny Flores.

Berekmeyer scored three runs, and Sebastian Sotello was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for the Pioneers.

Pahrump Valley 10, Cheyenne 8 — At Cheyenne, the Trojans scored three runs in the top of the sixth to break a 7-7 tie and held off the Desert Shields.

Pahrump’s big inning came after Cheyenne scored seven times in the fifth inning to tie the game. Carlos Rivera went 4-for-4 with three RBIs for the Trojans, and teammate Tyler Greene was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Angelo Hallenback went 4-for-4 with two runs for Cheyenne.

Centennial 11, Bear Creek (Colo.) 1 — At Centennial, Zach Dixon tossed a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went 2-for-3 with a run to lead the Bulldogs by the Bears in five innings.

Bryce Rheault was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and three RBIs, and Tyler Hennis went 2-for-3 for Centennial.

Hayden Grant added a double, a run and two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Bonanza 7, Del Sol 5 — At Del Sol, Andre Isaraq went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Bengals past the Dragons.

Byron Naftzger struck out six over five innings to pick up the win.

Casey Ladeira and Jonathan Massey each had a single and a double for the Bengals. Micah Higa, Spencer Faught and Eric Schultz each added a double for Bonanza.

Phil Taloma and Aaron Squires each doubled for the Dragons.

Faith Lutheran 6, Mojave 2 — At Mojave, Brandon Davis struck out nine and allowed five hits over five innings to lead the Crusaders past the Rattlers.

Chad Jones was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to spark Faith Lutheran’s offense.

Boulder City 14, Eldorado 4 — At Eldorado, Preston Van Diest was 4-for-4 with two doubles, four runs and four RBIs to help the Eagles top the Sundevils.

Steve Wagner was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs, and Nolan Desantis, Peyton Koopman and Patrick Garvin each added two hits for Boulder City.

Isaac Villanueva was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI for Eldorado.

Lincoln County 22-14, Calvary Chapel 3-0 — At Calvary Chapel, Mike Wood went 3-for-3 in the opener and 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs in the nightcap as the Lynx swept a pair of five-inning games from the Lions.

In the opener, McClain O’Connor, Charlie Scott, Casey Frehner, Preston Robbins, Christian Florence and Tristan Davis each had two hits for Lincoln County, which scored 12 runs in the first inning.

In the second game, O’Connor was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Florence was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Scott went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Lincoln County, which scored 10 runs in the second inning.

Sierra Vista 7, Western 0 — At Western, the Mountain Lions won by forfeit.

Liberty baseball coach Rich Ebarb died Wednesday night, the school confirmed. Ebarb has a long coaching resume in Southern Nevada.
