BLAZER BASH: Bengals fall to Sylmar after 14 K effort
Juvenall Terrazas wanted to help his slumping team from Sylmar, Calif., get off to a good start in the Blazer SportCoat Spring Bash.
He did plenty of that Monday.
Terrazas commanded the inside of the plate and used a hard-dropping breaking ball to strike out 14 Bonanza hitters in a four-hitter en route to Sylmar’s 5-3 win over the Bengals at Durango.
The senior also helped his own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a pair of RBIs.
“He really had it going today,” Sylmar coach Ray Rivera said of Terrazas. “He had good command of his fastball, and mostly he just threw strikes. It was a good day for him, and we’ll take any win right now.”
Bonanza’s Ricky Williams opened the game with a single, but the Sylmar hurler was nearly untouchable for the next four frames. Terrazas struck out seven of the next nine batters, and retired 15 of the next 17 Bengal overall.
Sylmar staked its pitcher to an early advantage with a two-run first inning, as Robert Garcia hit a bloop single to center field, and Tarrazas and Mario Ceballos followed with a pair of RBI singles. Zelyg Gutierrez added a base hit and scored in the second inning on a Frankie Figueroa single to stretch Sylmar’s lead to 3-0.
Bonanza stranded two runners in the first, and fell behind even more when Tarrazas crushed a Travis Ming offering over the left-field fence to make it 4-0.
“That ball left in a hurry,” Rivera said.
Bonanza’s Alec Taft hit a three-run shot of his own over the left center field wall in the sixth inning to pull the Bengals to within 4-3. But Tarrazas quickly ended the threat with his 12th strikeout of the game and finished off Bonanza in the seventh with two more strikeouts. The 14 strikeouts ranks second on the tournament’s all-time list, according to tournament officials.
Ming was saddled with the loss after giving up seven hits and four runs — three of them earned — in five innings.
Terrazas, who is weighing offers from Fresno State and Cal State Northridge, was more impressed with his team’s offensive production than his own standout day on the mound.
“We’ve really been slumping at the plate as a team, so it felt good to get the bats going today,”
Terrazas said. “Fourteen strikeouts was big for me — that’s the most I’ve ever had — but our hitting is what I’m most proud of.”
Spring Valley 2, Banning (Calif.) 0 — At Centennial, Dylan Drachler pitched a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead the Grizzlies past the Pilots.
Drew LaComb scored both runs for Spring Valley, coming home on Tyler Kartler’s single in the fourth and Robbie Brewster’s single in the sixth.
Brewster was 2-for-3 for the Grizzlies.
Legacy 11, Rim of the World (Calif.) 0 — At Las Vegas High, Avery Brandon hurled a two-hitter to help the Longhorns defeat the Fighting Scots in six innings.
Brandon had six strikeouts and no walks for Legacy, which scored in all but one inning.
Alex Wenzel was 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored for the Longhorns, and teammate Kyle Peeler went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
Centennial 11, Sunrise Mountain 1 — At Centennial, freshman Cooper Powell threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks to help the Bulldogs coast past the Miners in five innings.
Bryan Bonnell was 3-for-3 with four RBIs to pace Centennial, and teammate Austin Nelson went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Centennial 11, Verdugo Hills (Calif.) 1 — At Centennial, Ian Ogurek hit a grand slam as part of a nine-run fourth inning as the Bulldogs routed the Dons.
Ogurek finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Drake Sacenti was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Centennial.
Sierra Vista 14, Horizon (Calif.) 0 — At Sierra Vista, Jake Hager went 3-for-4 with a solo home run as the Mountain Lions blanked the Panthers in five innings.
Scott Tomassetti was 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Mountain Lions, and Jake Findlay added a three-run homer.
Sierra Vista’s Blair Goldsack and Derron Davis combined on a two-hitter.
Sierra Vista 14, Carson (Calif.) 2 — At Sierra Vista, Billy Santiwan was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs as the Mountain Lions routed the Colts in five innings.
Armando Perez homered, and Goldsack had three RBIs for Sierra Vista.
Durango 6, Eastlake (Calif.) 3 — At Durango, Mike Neighbors pitched six solid innings to earn a win, and Jason Fazendin went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored as the Trailblazers deafeated the Titans.
Jordan Hodges was 3-for-3 for Durango, which got a save from Ray Cardenas.
Lou Silva homered for Eastlake.
Durango 13, Sylmar (Calif.) 0 — At Durango, Mike Sukeyasu was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs to lead the Trailblazers to the five-inning win.
Scott Martinez added two doubles, and Jacob Dismont hit a home run for Durango.
Boulder City 11, Western 8 — At Basic, Jack LaMarca went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBIs to help the Eagles defeat the Warriors.
Michael Hernandez was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Boulder City, and teammate Nate Hafen went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Western’s Ryan Guay belted a two-run homer, and Josh Yocum had two doubles for the Warriors.
Basic 8, Boulder City 7 — At Basic, the Wolves scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-6 lead and held off the Eagles.
David Romero and Kyle Silva each went 2-for-3 for Basic.
Nate Hafen was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Boulder City, and Billy Barth blasted a two-run homer.
Basic 11, Garfield (Calif.) 9 — At Basic, Silva, Tyler Long and Andrew Chaves each doubled to help the Wolves edge the Bulldogs.
Cimarron-Memorial 20, Clark 2 — At Cimarron, 10 players hit safely to lead the Spartans to a rout of the Chargers in five innings.
Cody Stafford and Dominic Calabria had two hits and three RBIs apiece for Cimarron, which scored eight runs in the first inning. Nate Hale hit a solo homer for the Spartans.
Greg McKinney had an RBI double and scored a run for Clark.
Cimarron-Memorial 8, Monroe (Calif.) 4 — At Cimarron, Cody Clark went 3-for-3 with a triple, two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Spartans past the Vikings.
Nathan Hale was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Cimarron, and Kevin Dorantes had a home run and two RBIs for the Spartans.
Las Vegas 6, Rim of the World (Calif.) 4 — At Las Vegas, Daniel Ouzts belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth and pitched six solid innings to earn a win as the Wildcats held off the Fighting Scots.
Jose Sanchez pitched a perfect seventh inning for Las Vegas, which got two hits each from Justin Soto and Brandon Downey.
Andrew Thomas supplied a home run and two RBIs for Rim of the World.
Las Vegas 8, Birmingham (Calif.) 7 — At Las Vegas, Jesse Acosta went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and earned a win with 14 strikeouts and one walk as the Wildcats edged Birmingham.
Las Vegas took advantage of a throwing error and RBI singles by Acosta and Brandon Page to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth and take an 8-5 lead.
Tanner Chauncey homered and scored three times for the Wildcats, which got three hits and two RBIs from Xavier Palmer and two hits and two runs from Sanchez.
Kevin Torres and Jerry Zaragoza each hit a two-run home run for Birmingham.
Palo Verde 10, Del Sol 7 — At Palo Verde, Andy Dalaimo went 2-for-3 with two triples and two runs as the Panthers downed the Dragons.
Jared Webb had two doubles and two runs for Palo Verde, and teammate Cody Schuster added three RBIs.
The Panthers scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead and held on for the win.
Del Sol’s David Day and Luis Grullon each had two hits and scored two runs.
Pahrump Valley 12, Monroe (Calif.) 4 — At Cimarron, Sam Morrow went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, and Tom Eaton was 3-for-4 with two runs as the Trojans rolled past the Vikings.
Joe McCaw finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored for Pahrump.
Manny Villa was 3-for-4 for Monroe.
Liberty 10, Virgin Valley 0 — At Durango, Josh McCollum smacked two home runs to help the Patriots rout the Bulldogs in five innings.
McCollum went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and teammate Mike Vargas was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Liberty’s Chris Bradford struck out seven in four innings to earn the win.
Eldorado 16, Del Sol 10 — At Palo Verde, Eric Larsen was 2-for-3 with three runs and five RBIs as the Sundevils defeated the Dragons in a game called for time after the sixth inning.
Lucio Arreola had two triples for Eldorado. Nelson Herrera (two RBIs) and Chris Brown each added two hits for the Sundevils.
Poly (Calif.) 12, Eldorado 9 — At Palo Verde, the Parrots scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to rally past the Sundevils.
Lucio Arreola was 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs and four RBIs to lead Eldorado, and Nelson Herrera doubled twice for the Sundevils
San Fernando (Calif.) 8, Coronado 5 — At Sierra Vista, the Tigers scored four runs in the third with the help of a pair of squeeze bunts to down the Cougars.
David Garcia was 3-for-3, including an RBI bunt single in the third.
Taylor Giordano went 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Chris Blake was 2-for-3 with a double for Coronado.
