COWBOY CLASSIC: Throwing error helps Pioneers move into semifinals

Canyon Springs’ baseball team scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth to break a 4-4 tie, and the Pioneers held on for a 5-4 win over visiting Tech in the Cowboy Classic.

The Pioneers play at Chaparral in the semifinals at 9 a.m.

Zach Gardner was 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Canyon Springs. He hit a two-run triple to highlight the team’s three-run second inning that tied the score at 3-3.

Sebastian Sotello was 2-for-3 with a double, and teammate Trevor Berekmeyer was 2-for-3 for the Pioneers, who committed three errors in the first inning to allow Tech to take a 3-0 lead.

Johnny Flores went the distance to get the win, allowing one earned run on three hits. He struck out five with one walk.

Tech 4, Pahrump Valley 1 — At Canyon Springs, Alexis Acosta’s two-run triple in the fifth inning put the Roadrunners ahead for good in a win over the Trojans.

Pahrump led 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth before Christian Dominguez tied the game on an RBI double. Acosta followed with a triple and continued home on a throwing error to make it 4-1.

Acosta, who also tossed a four-hitter with four strikeouts, finished 3-for-3 with a double and the two-run triple.

Pahrump Valley 16, Valley 3 — At Canyon Springs, Drew Walker was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to help the Trojans rout the Vikings in five innings.

Josh Mortensen was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Pahrump, which scored seven runs in the second inning.

Geovanni Marrero-Pereznegron was 1-for-2 with a double for Valley.

Mojave 8, Virgin Valley 1 — At Mojave, Elijah Glaze went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs to help the Rattlers top the Bulldogs.

Scotty Wilson was 2-for-4 and scored a run for Mojave.

Tyler Williams and Chase Anderson combined on a four-hitter for the Rattlers.

Desert Pines 14, Sunrise Mountain 7 — At Chaparral, Jose Avellino was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Jaguars by the Miners in six innings.

Juan Castaneda was 4-for-4 with an RBI for Desert Pines.

Poutasi Poutasi scattered six hits in six innings to get the win.

Del Sol 7, Eldorado 6 — At Mojave, Matt Styck went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, and the Dragons made the most of three hits to nip the Sundevils.

Del Sol scored three runs with two outs in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie. After consecutive strikeouts to start the inning, the next two batters were hit by a pitch to set up Styck’s two-run triple.

David Decker was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Jason DeMaria was 2-for-4 with a triple for Eldorado.

Eldorado 20, Virgin Valley 2 — At Mojave, Joseph Torres went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, five runs and an RBI to help the Sundevils to the five-inning win over the Bulldogs.

Decker threw a three-hitter and went 3-for-3 with a double, four runs and two RBIs for Eldorado.

Isaac Villanueva went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, Ian Reber was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Trevor Swain had an inside-the-park homer for the Sundevils.

Chaparral 21, Sunrise Mountain 2 — At Chaparral, Sky Espinosa was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs as the Cowboys routed the Miners in five innings.

Tyler Crone, Mark O’Connor, Connor Jarvis and Antonio Vara each scored three runs for Chaparral, which scored 10 runs in the third inning.

Chaparral 15, Cheyenne 4 — At Chaparral, Tyler Crone was 3-for-3 with a double and four runs to help the Cowboys to the five-inning win over the Desert Shields.

Crone also went the distance, striking out 11 and allowing five hits, to get the win.

Espinosa was 2-for-4 with two runs, and David Ortiz added two hits for Chaparral. Jarvis scored three runs for the Cowboys.

Cheyenne’s Angelo Hallenback was 2-for-3, and George Carmona homered for the Desert Shields.
