Durango, Silverado settle for tie

Silverado baseball coach Brian Whitaker wanted to start the season after daylight saving time.

Because of what happened Friday.

The Skyhawks and Durango played to a 2-2 tie in the Bengal Varsity Tournament at Silverado. The Trailblazers had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Irvin Weems.

But the home plate umpire ended the game a few minutes later because of darkness.

Durango had loaded the bases.

Had the season started after daylight saving time, which begins Sunday, there would have been enough time to finish the game.

Weems, one of the state’s top freshmen, tripled in the first inning and scored on a passed ball. Senior Duke Pahukoa added an RBI double in the third for the Trailblazers, who led the first five innings.

Blake Zorne had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning for Silverado, and Nikolas Cortez singled home the game-tying run in the sixth.

Durango and Silverado resume tournament play Saturday morning. The Trail Blazers play Legacy, and the Skyhawks meet Bonanza.
