Looking ahead at the week in high school sports
Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.
Baseball
Monday — Sierra Vista at Spring Valley, 3:30 p.m.
The unranked Mountain Lions start a three-game series against No. 6 Spring Valley. Sierra Vista advanced to the championship game of the Blazer Spring Bash, and will try to take that momentum back into league play.
Tuesday — Bishop Gorman at Desert Oasis, 3:30 p.m.
Both teams are coming off a busy week after heading to San Diego for the Lions Tournament. The second-ranked Gaels took the first game of the series 8-6 on March 25.
Friday — Rancho at Coronado, 3:30 p.m.
The eighth-ranked Rams have been hot, having won six of their last seven games. They enter the week tied with seventh-ranked Coronado for third place in the Sunrise League at 9-3.
Boys golf
Thursday — Southwest League match at Spanish Trail, 11 a.m.
Bishop Gorman had two weeks off after suffering back-to-back losses in dual matches against Coronado and Foothill. The Gaels’ best team score in the first two league matches was 411. Can they go lower this time?
Softball
Monday — Desert Oasis at Bishop Gorman, 3:30 p.m.
The opener in a three-game series between two teams fighting for the No. 3 seed in the Southwest League. The third-place Diamondbacks (7-2) own a two-game lead over Gorman in the standings.
Tuesday — Shadow Ridge at Centennial, 3:30 p.m.
Shadow Ridge enters the first game of a three-game series tied for second in the Northwest League and has won seven straight league games. The Bulldogs were swept by league-leading Palo Verde two weeks ago and dropped from first to fourth in the standings.
Wednesday — Palo Verde at Faith Lutheran, 3:30 p.m.
This marks the second game of the three-game series between the top-ranked Panthers and host Crusaders. Faith Lutheran was tied for second in the Northwest League at the start of the week but faced only one opponent ranked in the Southern Nevada Coaches Poll prior to this week.
Friday — Rancho at Coronado, 3:30 p.m.
The top two teams in the Sunrise League standings square off. The Cougars have yet to lose in league play, including a 5-1 victory over Rancho when the teams met March 23. Coronado pitcher Tatum Spangler struck out 18 in the first matchup.
Boys swimming
Saturday — Palo Verde vs. Arbor View at Municipal, 9:45 a.m.
The Aggies are coming off sweeping every event in their meet against Cimarron-Memorial and will look to ride that wave of momentum against the defending Class 4A state champions.
Girls swimming
Saturday — Shadow Ridge vs. Bishop Gorman at Municipal, 9:45 a.m.
The Mustangs last swam against the defending Class 4A state champion Palo Verde but fell 189½-115½. They will have a better chance of taking down Bishop Gorman in what will probably be a more competitive pairing.
Track and field
Friday-Saturday — Skyhawk Invitational at Silverado
Both of the Class 4A defending state champions will be competing in the meet, which begins at 3 p.m. on Friday. The host Skyhawks won the Division I (now Class 4A) boys title last season, and Centennial took the girls championship. Last year’s Division I-A (now Class 3A) boys champ Desert Pines also will be in the field. The meet picks up at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday
Friday — Richard Lewis Invitational at Moapa Velley, 3 p.m.
Bishop Gorman, Arbor View, Green Valley are among the teams heading to Overton. The Aggies swept the team titles in last year’s meet.
Boys volleyball
Monday — Tech at Mojave, 6 p.m.
Tech, which currently sits in a tie for second place in the Class 3A Southern League, will travel to face the three-time defending state champions. Can the Roadrunners pull the upset and hand Mojave its first league loss since May 2, 2012? The Rattlers have won 37 consecutive league matches since falling to Shadow Ridge.
Tuesday — Green Valley at Foothill, 6 p.m.
Here’s a rematch of last season’s state final. Green Valley won its first state title by dropping the Falcons in four sets. This time around, the teams are battling for second place in the Southeast League.
Thursday — Palo Verde at Centennial, 6 p.m.
Palo Verde dropped three of four Northwest League matches to begin conference play, including a five-set loss to the Bulldogs on March 28. The Panthers hope to start climbing the league standings, and a win here would be a good starting point.
