RECRUITING: Rancho duo commits to UNLV

Rancho baseball players Brandon Pletsch and Zak Qualls have given oral commitments to UNLV, Rams coach Tom Pletsch said Tuesday.

Qualls had originally committed to San Diego State. UNLV hired former College of Southern Nevada skipper Tim Chambers as its new coach June 11.

Brandon Pletsch and Qualls, who will both be seniors at Rancho in the fall, were key components of a Rams team that went 33-5 and finished one game short of its first state title since 1976.

Brandon Pletsch, a shortstop and pitcher, hit .480 with nine home runs and 49 RBIs — all team highs — as a junior.

Qualls, a 6-foot-3-inch left-hander and outfielder, was 5-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings as a junior. He also batted .446 with three homers and 29 RBIs.
