REGION BASEBALL: Howell powers Eagles past Pirates in Division I-A

Tanner Howell tossed a two-hitter and struck out eight in five innings and had three RBIs Thursday as Boulder City defeated Moapa Valley 12-1 in the losers’ bracket final of the Division I-A Southern Region Tournament at Faith Lutheran.

The Eagles (22-8) will meet tourney host Faith Lutheran at 4 p.m. Friday in the region final. Should Boulder City win that game, a second game would follow.

Boulder City exploded for six runs to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second inning, cashing in on three errors by the Pirates (18-10-1).

Howell’s two-run triple capped the inning, and the Eagles added five more runs in the fourth.

Peyton Koopman and Austin Wishard each added two RBIs.

Tino Ragone had two hits and scored twice for the Eagles.

Jake Repp had both of the hits for the Pirates, and drove in the lone Moapa Valley (18-10-1) run.

Moapa Valley 6, Chaparral 1 — The Pirates took advantage of a key error in a three-run fifth inning in their win over the Cowboys.

The Pirates trailed by 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but scored three runs in each of the next two innings to pull away.

Kasen Hughes opened the fifth with a single. After two straight outs, Landon Willard walked. Josh Repp hit a liner off the leg of Chaparral pitcher Mark Nick O’Connor, scoring Hughes to tie the game.

Jared Repp followed with a fly ball to left field, but two Cowboy outfielders collided and the ball dropped. Willard scored on the play for the go-ahead run.

Kannon Evans then delivered an RBI single for a 3-1 Pirate lead. Chaparral ended the season at 22-9.

DIVISION III SOUTHERN LEAGUE

Jordan Shepard tossed a two-hitter and struck out 14 to lead Laughlin to a 4-1 win over The Meadows in the opening round of the Division III Southern League tournament at Mountain View.

Shepard struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced before allowing a walk and a single in the fourth.

Shepard added a two-run double, and Devon Smith had a solo home run for the Cougars (22-6), who will meet Needles (15-6) in the winners’ bracket final at 1 p.m. Friday.

Justin Diamond allowed just five hits and struck out 17 in six innings for The Meadows (11-8), which will face Lincoln County (11-8) in an elimination game at 10 a.m.

Needles 9, Lincoln County 2 — Devin Truscott allowed three hits in five scoreless innings and went 1-for-2 with a double, two runs and a stolen base as the Mustangs topped the Lynx.

Chris Florence was 2-for-4 with a run for Lincoln County.

DIVISION IV SOUTHERN LEAGUE

Jeremy Minick threw a one-hitter to lead Pahranagat Valley to a 13-1 win over visiting Indian Springs in the Division IV Southern League Tournament.

The Panthers (19-4) play Round Mountain (16-5) at 1 p.m. Friday.

Round Mountain advanced with a 7-3 win over Tonopah (20-11), which faces Indian Springs (8-11) in an elimination game at 4 p.m.

Liberty baseball coach Rich Ebarb died Wednesday night, the school confirmed. Ebarb has a long coaching resume in Southern Nevada.
