Roundup: Austin Wells’ homer helps Gorman claim win over Riverton

Austin Wells hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning on Wednesday to help Bishop Gorman’s baseball team to a 9-7 home win over Riverton (Utah) in the Desert Classic.

Wells’ homer made it 7-6, and the Gaels added two more runs in the inning.

Riverton scored a run in the seventh and had the bases loaded after reliever Tyler Curtis walked one and hit a batter with one out.

But Curtis struck out the next batter and got the final out on a grounder to first to preserve the win.

Wells went 2-for-4 with a double, and Dutch Landis was 2-for-4 with a homer, three runs and two RBIs for Gorman. Christian Lamar was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple a run and an RBI, and Curtis was 2-for-2 with two runs for the Gaels.

Connor O’Shea and Max Prescott each went 2-for-4 for Gorman.

Desert Oasis 9, Bellflower (Calif.) 1 — At Desert Oasis, Izzy Gutierrez tossed six solid innings with nine strikeouts and no earned runs as the Diamondbacks routed the Buccaneers in the Desert Classic.

Cole Schaefer and Parker Schmidt each went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and teammate Zac Czerniawski had two hits and an RBI for Desert Oasis.

Liberty 1, Davis (Utah) 0 — At the College of Southern Nevada, Dawson Beard threw six shutout innings and struck out 11 as the Patriots earned the win in the Desert Classic.

Beard struck out 11, and Ethan Safier pitched a scoreless seventh to get the save.

James Katona had an RBI single in the second inning to account for the game’s only run.

Spring Valley 8, Durango 2 — At Durango, Jonathan Bakken went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Michael Marraro supplied three RBIs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly as the Grizzlies beat the Trailblazers.

Spring Valley scored five runs in the seventh to pull away.

Justin Lucas went 2-for-3 and drove in both runs for Durango, and teammate Duke Pahukoa was 3-for-3 with two doubles.

Sierra Vista 12, Bonanza 10 — At Sierra Vista, Cooper Kitrel was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Nick Morice doubled and drove in three runs as the Mountain Lions held off the Bengals.

Tyler MacIntyre, Keanu Kinney-Jorge and Josh DeGuzman each went 2-for-2 with two runs, and Isaiah Williams was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Sierra Vista. MacIntyre and Kinney-Jorge each drove in a run.

Makai DeSoto was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs for Bonanza. Brandon Rivera went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, and Ryan Webster was 2-for-3 with a run for the Bengals, who scored three runs in the top of the seventh.

Basic 12, Silverado 2 — At Silverado, Garrett Giles was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs and two RBIs in the Wolves’ five-inning win over the Skyhawks.

Logan Spauer went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Kyle Turner and John Howard Bobo each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Basic.

Jesse Fonteboa went the distance to get the win and also hit a two-run homer for the Wolves.

Brant Hunt went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Silverado, and teammate Sean Graves was 2-for-3.

Shadow Ridge 11, Cimarron-Memorial 1 — At Cimarron, Brennan Lyman was 3-for-3 with a triple, a homer, two runs and two RBIs as the Mustangs beat the Spartans in five innings.

Branson Tressler added a home run and two RBIs for Shadow Ridge, which used a seven-run third inning to pull away.

Mason Rhiner pitched a four-hitter to get the win. He struck out two with no walks.

Cameron Stafford was 2-for-2 for Cimarron.

Palo Verde 11, Arbor View 1 — At Palo Verde, winning pitcher Bryce Robison helped himself with a solo home run, and Nick Zuppas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as the Panthers subdued the Aggies in six innings.

Jacob Godman had a double and two RBI for Palo Verde. Peyton Cole went 3-for-4, and Nate Bartlett was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Panthers.

John Edwards went 2-for-2 and drove in the lone run for Arbor View.

Centennial 16, Legacy 1 — At Centennial, Nik Dobar was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs in a five-innign win over the Longhorns.

Garrett Holden was 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI for the Bulldogs. Brian Wyche was 1-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs for Centennial.

Zack Simon pitched a one-hitter with two strikeouts to get the win.

Legacy’s Zach Ahmed doubled and drove in a run.

Green Valley 14, Valley 0 — At Valley, Gavin Amelburu was 2-for-2 with a triple, three runs and three RBIs to help the Gators to the five-inning victory over the Vikings.

Garrett Nelson was 2-for-2 with a triple and four runs, and Carter Gehlken went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI for Green Valley.

Scott Gruber was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Max Leuga doubled and drove in two runs for the Gators.

Four Green Valley pitchers combined on a one-hitter.

Coronado 13, Eldorado 0 — At Coronado, Brayden Buttweiler fired a five-inning two-hitter as the Cougars blasted the Sundevils.

Taylor Darden was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and Matthew Galdi went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Coronado, which scored five runs in the fourth to pull away.

Jose Espejo and Julio Rodarte had Eldorado’s two hits.

The Meadows 15, GV Christian 0 — At The Meadows, Sam Kaplan, Brett Lieuallen, Brandon Medina and Justin Tanaka each homered to help the Mustangs to the three-inning win.

Lieuallen was 3-for-3 with five RBIs, and Medina went 3-for-4 with three runs for The Meadows, which had three pitchers combine on a no-hitter.

Lake Mead 26-12, Democracy Prep 0-0 — At Rafael Rivera Park, Bryan White and Joseph Johnson combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the Eagles beat the Blue Knights in the second game.

White struck out 12 and walked one in 4⅔ innings to get the win.

Mitchell Dolinar was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs for Lake Mead. Ryan Kennedy was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs for the Eagles.

In the opener, Dominic Desch threw a three-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts.

White went 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs and five RBIs in the first game.

Mojave 11, Pahranagat Valley 10 — At Mojave, the Rattlers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to edge the Panthers.

Rudy Fernandez singled home Tyler Beadles with the winning run.

Beadles, Mike Cianci and Zack Casteel each went 3-for-4 for Mojave.

Stockton Maxwell was 3-for-5 for Pahrangat Valley.
