ROUNDUP: Hicks’ homer hands Gators league opener over Silverado

Casey Hicks’ two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday lifted Green Valley’s baseball team to an 8-6 win over visiting Silverado in the Southeast League opener for both teams.

Scott Arn singled with one out and was lifted for pinch-runner Bryan Simpkins, who scored on Hicks’ home run.

Arn finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Evan Van Hoosier went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and an RBI for the Gators (10-1).

David Opperman tossed 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win for the Gators, who used a four-run fifth inning to rally from a 6-2 deficit. Opperman allowed one hit and struck out four.

Bobby Johnson hit a three-run homer for Silverado (6-1).

Valley 8, Chaparral 7 — At Valley, Rayce Rayos hit an RBI double with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Vikings the victory over the Cowboys.

Rayos’ hit scored Levi Lawrence, who had walked to lead off the inning.

Rayos finished 3-for-5. Lawrence went 3-for-3 with a triple, an inside-the-park home run and two RBIs, and Marcus Mejia was 3-for-5 with an RBI for Valley.

Chaparral’s Raul Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, and Arik Wunshe went 3-for-5 with a dobule and two RBIs for the Cowboys.

Coronado 11, Basic 1 — At Basic, cousins Cody and Taylor Giordano each went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs to power the Cougars past the Wolves in five innings.

Steven Pollex was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, and winning pitcher Kenny Oakley scattered three hits and struck out five. Miles Bice added a single and a double for the Cougars.

David Romero had a double for Basic.

Foothill 11, Del Sol 0 — At Del Sol, Kris Soto threw a two-hitter with four strikeouts as the Falcons downed the Dragons in six innings.

Soto finished 3-for-4 with a triple, Dylan Ellis went 3-for-4 with two doubles, and Jordan Stewart was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double for the Falcons, who led 7-0 after two innings.

Eldorado 13, Desert Pines 3 — At Eldorado, Eric Larsen went 3-for-4 with two triples, four RBIs and three runs as the Sundevils topped the Jaguars in five innings.

Chris Brown was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs for Eldorado, which scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first.

Bishop Gorman 15, Olympic Heights (Fla.) 2 — At Lake Worth, Fla., T.J. White went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs and three RBIs to help the Gaels to a five-inning win in the National Grand Slam Tournament.

Kenny Meimerstorf added a three-run home run, and Cory Welch was 1-for-1 with a home run, four runs and two RBIs for Gorman.

Liberty 18, Tech 4 — At Tech, Dylan Rogers singled, homered and drove in two runs, and Trevor Williams went 2-for-3 with a double and four runs to lead the Patriots past the Roadrunners.

Marcos Rivera went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run, and Giovanni Battistoni added a double for Liberty which scored seven runs in the top of the seventh.

Tech’s Travis James went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run.

Las Vegas 10, Sunrise Mountain 0 — At Las Vegas, Tanner Chauncey tripled twice and drove in three runs, and Xavier Palmer added a triple as the Wildcats shut out the Miners in six innings.

Quinnton Mack, Robert Melendrez and Jesse Acosta each had a double for Las Vegas, and four Wildcat pitchers combined on a three-hitter.

Rancho 16, Canyon Springs 4 — At Rancho, Zak Qualls had two doubles and three RBIs, and Justin Pankratz added a double and two RBIs to lead the Rams in a five-inning rout of the Pioneers.

P.J. Matha hit a triple and earned the win, and Kevin Kline added a double for Rancho, which led 7-1 after the first inning. Gabe Chavira was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Rams.

Larry Dungey went 2-for-2 with a run for Canyon Springs.

Henderson International 8, Indian Springs 7 — At Henderson International, Charles Pachas hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to score Cole Fouch with the go-ahead run as the Wolverines nipped the Thunderbirds.

Pachas was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and teammate Boomer Sherrill earned the win on the mound and hit a two-run single in the first inning for Henderson International.

Keenan Gladd-Brown, Jay Sutorius and Chris Laliberte each had a double for the Wolverines.

Trinity 13, Agassi Prep 0 — At Rivera Field, Gage Neuwohner pitched a five-inning, two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks to carry the Thunder past the Stars.

Neuwohner also batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Avery Harden and James Zaino both went 2-for-3 for Trinity. Harden belted two doubles for the Thunder, and Jamil Thompson added a triple.
