ROUNDUP: Romero’s blast sends Bonanza past Gaels

Daniel Romero belted a three-run home run in the third inning and came on in relief to wiggle out of a seventh-inning jam Thursday to lift Bonanza’s baseball team to a 7-5 win over visiting Bishop Gorman in the Southwest League opener for both teams.

Romero’s homer helped the Bengals build a 5-0 lead in the third inning.

Bonanza still held a 7-3 lead with the bases empty and two outs in the top of the seventh before the Gaels started to rally.

Consecutive hits and a walk started the rally, and Nick Gates’ double trimmed the lead to 7-5 with runners at second and third, but Romero induced a shallow fly ball to center field that Austin Taft raced in on and dived to make the game-ending catch.
