SMALL SCHOOLS: Mortensen’s home run helps Pirates stun Eagles in 3A tourney

Moapa Valley’s Dylan Mortensen belted a three-run homer in the third inning and struck out the final batter with runners on the corners to earn the save as the Pirates edged host Boulder City 5-4 on  Friday to move into the championship game of the Class 3A Southern League baseball tournament.

Mortensen finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Colton Schulz tripled and went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Billy Barth was 3-for-4 with a run for Boulder City.

Boulder City 7, Virgin Valley 6 — At Boulder City, pinch runner Colton Bosnos scored on a balk in the bottom of the seventh to give the Eagles the win over the Bulldogs to move into the title game.

Boulder City faces Moapa Valley at 10 a.m. Saturday, and would have to beat the Pirates twice to claim the title.

Nate Hafen singled to start the seventh and was replaced by Bosnos, who stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Hafen finished 3-for-4, Tanner Howell doubled twice, scored a run and added an RBI, and Aubrey Wrightsman went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs for Boulder City.

Cody Faught went 3-for-3 with two runs for Virgin Valley.

Moapa Valley 18, Virgin Valley 1 — At Boulder City, Jake Repp pitched a three-hitter, and Shane Terril was 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs and three RBIs to lead the Pirates past the Bulldogs in five innings.

Braden Geary and Dillon Sullivan each went 3-for-3 with three runs for Moapa Valley.
