BOYS BASKETBALL: Demetrius Valdez, Durango hold off Sierra Vista

Demetrius Valdez had 20 points on Thursday to lead Durango’s boys basketball team to a 65-63 road win over Sierra Vista.

Zyare Rudding scored 17 points, and Jeremie Portuondo added 16 points for Durango, which led 44-36 at the end of three quarters.

Maka Ellis scored 31 points to lead Sierra Vista, which scored with three seconds remaining to cut the lead to two.

Maui Sera Josef added 13 points, and Chris McCoy scored 12 for the Mountain Lions.

Virgin Valley 45, Tech 43 — At Tech, Devin Cox scored 16 points, and teammate Hogan Fowles made 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch to give the Bulldogs a narrow win over the Roadrunners.

Jarett Tietjen added nine points for Virgin Valley, which outscored Tech 15-6 in the fourth quarter.

Jurelle Orbino scored 16 points to lead the Roadrunners.

Canyon Springs 77, Rancho 65 — At Rancho, Christopher Hawkins scored 21 points to power the Pioneers by the Rams.

Kevin Legardy added 15 points for Canyon Springs, which outscored Rancho 24-12 in the second quarter to take a 41-28 lead.

Joseph Haulcy (14 points) and Jovon Coleman (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Pioneers.

Rancho’s Justin Holiday led all scorers with 34 points. Dayshawn Robinson scored 12 for the Rams, and teammate Chrys Jackson had 10 points and eight assists.

Desert Oasis 82, Spring Valley 70 — At Spring Valley, Jacob Heese scored 28 points to carry the Diamondbacks over the Grizzles.

Nate Van added 15 points for Desert Oasis. Tyler McClendon had 13 points, and Manny Mitchell scored 11 for the Diamondbacks.

Keelan Wickersham led Spring Valley with 22 points. Justin Bonner had 13 points, and Demetrius McWhorter scored 10 for the Grizzlies.

Findlay Prep 77, Madison Prep (La.) 50 — At Springfield, Missouri, P.J. Washington had 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to help the Pilots roll to the win in the Tournament of Champions.

Lamine Diane added 21 points and six rebounds for Findlay, which outscored Madison 30-12 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Tadas Kararinas had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Reggie Chaney had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Pilots.

Josh LeBlanc led Madison with 15 points.

Findlay plays Sierra Canyon (California) in the tournament semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday. Sierra Canyon is ranked No. 10 in the nation by USA Today. The Pilots are ranked No. 4.

Bishop Gorman 92, Bonanza 51 — At Bishop Gorman, Saxton Howard supplied 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Gaels blitzed the Bengals.

Dominic Proctor and Jarrett Jordan each added 13 points for Gorman, which drained nine 3-pointers.

Brandon Noone scored 15 points to lead Bonanza, and Devin Hansbrough contributed 11 points for the Bengals.

Valley 49, Eldorado 39 — At Valley, Oscar Burns had 15 points and three assists, and the Vikings pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Sundevils.

John King added 13 points, and Tommy Anderson had eight points and five assists for Valley, which led 21-14 at halftime.

Reggie Ingram and Markaule Pace each scored 12 to lead Eldorado.

Chaparral 80, Del Sol 56 — At Del Sol, John Brooks had 16 points to lead the Cowboys over the Dragons.

Chaparral’s Z’mari Minter had 15 points, Jonathan Tendale had 14 points and Ronnie Hicks scored 10.

Del Sol’s Jonathan Spearman led all scorers with 20 points.

Agassi Prep 64, Adelson School 61 — At Adelson School, Najeeb Muhammad scored four of his game-high 18 points in overtime as the Stars outlasted the Lions.

Akeemis Williams had 17 points, and Allen Merritt scored 14 for Agassi Prep, which trailed 31-26 at halftime.

Miles Hagan led Adelson School with 14 points. Jake Buchman and Brandon Pappas each scored 12 points, and Jacob Elharrar had 11 points for the Lions.

Needles 52, Calvary Chapel 49 — At Calvary Chapel, Trey Tsosie scored 11 points to lead the Mustangs past the Lions.

Dillon Darrow added nine points for Needles, which led 23-18 at the half.

Elijah Martinez scored 20 points to lead the Lions.

Coral Academy 86, Innovations International 67 — At Innovations International, Isaiah Spears had 26 points, and Ryan Djino had 22 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the Falcons defeated the Ambassadors.

Zachary Hammer added 21 points and nine rebounds for Coral Academy, and teammate Isaac Spears had 10 points and five assists.

Justin Evans led Innovations with 23 points. Derec Anderson and Eugene Stewart each scored 13 for the Ambassadors.
