BOYS BASKETBALL: Gaynor, Trailblazers top California squad

Durango's Darryl Gaynor had 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, and the Trailblazers used a big second half to knock off visiting St. Joseph (Calif.) 55-41 on Saturday.

Alex Arias finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots, and teammate Vee Price had seven rebounds for Durango, which was 18-for-25 from the free-throw line compared to a 6-for-13 showing by St. Joseph.

Arias’ fast-break dunk, off a feed from Gaynor, gave the Trailblazers a 37-28 lead after three quarters, and Gaynor opened the fourth with a three-point play to put Durango up by 12.

St. Joseph, led by 6-foot-7-inch post Keith Datu, got within 10 before Arias’ three-point play with 4:46 remaining sparked a 13-6 spurt that gave the Trailblazers their biggest lead at 55-38.

Datu poured in 28 points and was a tough cover inside and out for Durango, especially in the first half. Datu had nine points in the second quarter, and his 3-pointer with 1:41 left in the second quarter ensured the Trailblazers would only have a 24-21 lead at the half.

But Durango collapsed its defense around Datu in the second half, holding the senior to 10 points until his late 3-pointer capped the scoring.

Centennial 64, Paramount (Calif.) 44 — At Durango, Garrett Scheer recorded 19 points and five rebounds, and Terrell Hicks added 12 points and five boards as the Bulldogs cruised past the Pirates.

Centennial used a 20-6 run in the first half to take a 36-21 lead at the break, and Scheer’s breakaway dunk put Centennial on top 42-25 early in the third quarter. Hicks’ acrobatic scoop shot late gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the game at 60-34.

Troy Brown contributed nine points, 13 rebounds and five steals for Centennial despite being rested for the entire fourth quarter.

Jonathon Fleming paced Paramount with 10 points, and Ranyel Hawkins scored nine.

Elko 56, Cheyenne 39 — At Durango, Jarrell Bell notched 11 points in the Desert Shields’ loss to the Indians.

Cheyenne was limited to two field goals in the third quarter as Elko turned a nine-point halftime lead into a 38-25 advantage.

Nathan Klekas led the Indians with 16 points. Brandon Jenkins chipped in with 12 points on four 3-pointers, and Marshall Dumas added 10 points.

Lincoln County 60, Lake Mead 43 — At Panaca, McClain O’Connor scored 18 points to lead the Lynx over the Eagles.

Derek Shumway added 15 points, and Mike Wood scored 10 for Lincoln County, which outscored Lake Mead 20-6 in the third quarter to pull away.

Dylan Graham paced the Eagles with 15 points. Garieon Glenn and Brendon LeBaron each scored 10 for he Eagles.

Pahranagat Valley 66, Indian Springs 16 — At Alamo, Paden Higbee had 16 points and the Panthers routed the Thunderbirds.

Tabor Maxwell added 15 points, and Wade Leavitt scored 11 for Pahranagat Valley, which led 24-4 after one quarter.

Devon Sickler led Indian Springs with seven points.

Beaver Dam (Ariz.) 37, Sandy Valley 25 — At Sandy Valley, Carlos Sherril scored 17 points to lead Beaver Dam over the Sidewinders.

Lane Eastham and James Rau scored six points apiece for Sandy Valley.
