Centennial’s Troy Brown leads USA to win in U17 World Championships

Troy Brown had 13 points, three rebounds and three assists Thursday to lead the USA Men’s U17 basketball team to a 119-45 win over Taiwan in pool play of the FIBA World Championships in Zaragoza, Spain.

The Centennial standout played a team-high 23 minutes and shot 5-for-10 from the field.

Findlay Prep’s Markus Howard, who is the team captain, had 10 points, four assists and three rebounds. He shot 4-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-5 on 3-pointers.

Howard played 16 minutes.

Kevin Knox II, the seventh-ranked player in the ESPN 100 in the class of 2017, led the USA with 15 points. The USA, which opened the game on a 16-0 run, shot 54 percent from the field and led 67-24 at halftime.

The USA will face Turkey at noon Friday in pool play.

‘Four best teams’ vying for 5A boys basketball state title

The top four Class 5A boys basketball teams — Coronado, Liberty, Bishop Gorman and Arbor View — will play for the state title Thursday and Friday at the Thomas & Mack Center.
