Clark’s Wilson will sign with Southern Utah

Sherron Wilson almost signed with Southern Utah during the fall signing period in November.

Next week, the senior small forward for the Clark boys basketball team will get a second chance.

Wilson said Tuesday he will sign a letter of intent with the Thunderbirds when the spring signing period opens April 16. The last day student-athletes can sign for Division I basketball is May 21, and for all other sports, including Division II basketball, the signing period ends Aug. 1.

“I knew it was the right choice,” Wilson said. “It just took awhile to make the decision.”

Wilson said he chose Southern Utah over an offer from Air Force in the fall but decided to “let stuff play out” and opted against signing during the early period. After discussing his options with his family, Wilson recommitted to Southern Utah but did not make his decision public during his senior season.

Wilson also drew interest from Pepperdine and Tulsa.

“I loved the atmosphere. It’s just like being back home in Colorado,” Wilson said. “(Cedar City is) a small city, and I liked the coaches a lot, too. That’s what convinced me to sign there.”

The 6-foot-5-inch Wilson averaged 12.1 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Chargers.

He missed almost 1½ months after suffering a broken foot during a late-December tournament in Arizona but returned to help Clark win the Division I-A state title.

Southern Utah finished 2-27, including a 73-51 home loss to UNLV on Dec. 14, and went 1-19 in the Big Sky Conference this season.

“I think it’s a great fit for him,” Clark coach Chad Beeten said. “He’ll have the opportunity to come in and play right away and make an immediate impact.”

While Wilson settled on his college destination, two all-state basketball players remain undecided about theirs.

Bishop Gorman coach Grant Rice said senior point guard Noah Robotham, the Review-Journal and Gatorade state player of the year, recently visited Akron and San Jose State but was not ready to commit.

Robotham is starting to draw interest from Oregon State, according to Rice, and was scheduled to visit Boston College until coach Steve Donahue was fired last month. Robotham is a two-star prospect, according to Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Durango senior guard Darryl Gaynor is considering offers from Cal State-Bakersfield, Florida A&M and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, according to Trailblazers coach DeShawn Henry.

Gaynor was a second-team all-state selection after he averaged 24.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists as a senior.

■ FERTITTA CHOOSES IRISH — Bishop Gorman junior safety Nicco Fertitta made an oral commitment to Notre Dame during an unofficial visit to the school.

Last season, the 5-foot-9-inch, 170-pound Fertitta was sixth on the Gaels with 47 tackles and had one interception. He is a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, Scout.com and 247sports.com.

■ RECRUITING WATCH — Sunrise Mountain senior Ebonique Diaz signed with Southern University (La.) for cross country. She is the first student-athlete from the school, which opened in 2009, to sign a letter of intent, according to Miners athletic director George Knatz. … Legacy senior Matthew Sink made an oral commitment to Waldorf (Iowa) for football.
