CLASS 2A HONORS: Lynx’s Walker caps eventful season with Player of Year
February 22, 2011 - 3:15 pm
There wasn’t much need for debate on Player of the Year in Class 2A Southern League boys basketball.
Not after Lincoln County senior guard Dantley Walker averaged 36.2 points and 10.3 assists while leading the Lynx to a 24-7 season and the playoffs.
Walker, who became the state’s all-time leader in points (3,304) and assists (887) during a season in which he committed to UNLV, took Player of the Year to headline league honors.
Laughlin’s Pat Woodburn was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to an 11-11 season — their first year in 2A.
Needles and Agassi Prep, the two teams headed to the 2A state tournament, landed two players each on the first team.
Needles guard Michael Hills and center Aaron Burns received first-team honors, along with Agassi Prep post Quincy Brown and swingman Kalinn Jackson.
Mountain View guard Justyn Anderson, The Meadows forward Garrett Gosse and Lake Mead guard L.J. Yamzon also received first-team honors.
In girls basketball, Needles senior forward Gena Chavira took Player of the Year.
Chavira leads the Mustangs (25-3) with 17.2 points per game, 9.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 3.1 steals and 2.3 blocks this season.
The Mustangs open the 2A state tournament with a semifinal against White Pine at 6:20 p.m. Friday at Durango.
Coach of the Year went to Lincoln County’s Matt Cameron, who guides the Lynx (16-10) into a state semifinal against Pershing County at 3 p.m. Friday at Durango.
First-team honors also went to Mountain View guards Patrice Marshall and Briana Marruffo, Agassi Prep guard Alannah Conway, Lake Mead guard Taylor Badua-Kono, Lincoln County post Melanie Florence and Needles guard Abby Chandler.
