DIVISION IV: Hosier sets tourney mark with eight 3s in Pahranagat victory

RENO — Bailee Hosier hit a state tournament record eight 3-pointers and finished with 33 points Friday to help Pahranagat Valley’s girls basketball team to a 78-46 win over Pyramid Lake in a Division IV state semifinal at Wooster High School.

Hosier had five 3-pointers in the first half and finished with one more than the previous mark of seven set by Smith Valley’s Staci Vick in 1997.

Kimberly Lewis scored 14 and Traci Strong 11 for the Panthers (24-4), who will face Eureka (28-2) in the state final at 6 p.m. today at UNR’s Lawlor Events Center.

Patricia Christy had 24 points for the Lakers (22-3), and teammate Jakoby Stump scored 13.

The Lakers hung close in, trailing 38-27 at halftime and 50-40 after three quarters before Hosier scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Eureka 59, Tonopah 30 — Natalie Norcutt had 11 of her 15 points in the first half as the Vandals built a 34-15 halftime cushion and eliminated the Muckers (12-10) in the first semifinal.

Taylor Usry scored eight points during a 23-8 second-quarter run for Eureka. Usry finished with 14 points for the Vandals.

Ahley Gray had 10 points for Tonopah.

BOYS

Palmer Chaplin scored 25 points, and Whittell’s boys basketball team held Spring Mountain in check late to pull out a 53-50 win over the Golden Eagles in a Division IV state semifinal.

Whittell (24-4) will face Virginia City (23-5) for the state title at 7:45 p.m. today at Lawlor Events Center.

Chaplin hit three 3-pointers and had 11 points in the first quarter as the Warriors built a 20-11 lead.

But the Golden Eagles rallied, outscoring Whittell 21-6 in the second quarter to take a 32-26 advantage into halftime.

Spring Mountain (14-14) managed just five field goals the rest of the way as Whittell tied the game 42-42 after three quarters, and Chaplin scored six fourth-quarter points to push the Warriors to the finish line.

Mark Waite added 12 points for Whittell.

Devonte Rickey had 14 points, and David Otuafi and DeQuan Porchia each scored 10 for Spring Mountain.

Virginia City 66, Adelson School 38 — Brayden Ferguson scored nine of his 22 points in the first quarter as the Muckers built a quick 19-9 lead in a rout of the Lions.

Clint Hess added 15 points for Virginia City, which expanded its lead to 37-17 at halftime. Steven Punchard scored 12 for the Muckers.

Jake Buchman had 12 points for Adelson School (17-3), which was making its first appearance in the state tournament.
