DURANGO TOURNEY: Collie not rusty in Silverado win

Wade Collie hadn’t played in a basketball game in 10 days when he stepped onto Durango’s floor Friday.

The time away must have done him wonders.

Collie had nine points and eight rebounds in just the first quarter of Silverado’s game against Dorsey (Calif.), and he was far from done.

The 6-foot-5-inch senior forward had 32 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Skyhawks to a 68-56 win in the first round of the National Invitational tournament.

Silverado (10-2), which hadn’t played since a 54-43 win over Basic on Dec. 16, will meet Mojave in a quarterfinal today at 11:30 a.m.

“He had a mental block in our first 11 games,” Silverado coach Ron Childress said. “We had a walk-through today, and we talked about us only going as far as he takes us.”

Even with Collie’s quick start, the Skyhawks trailed 32-26 at halftime.

Collie promptly scored 10 points in the third quarter — single-handedly outscoring Dorsey — and nine more in the fourth to lead his team to the win.

“I just tried to block out all the negative things going on in the game and just do my job,” Collie said.

He was effective in the key and on the perimeter and on defense.

“He did everything we needed him to do,” Childress said. “He rebounded; he can shoot; he plays defense.”

Collie compiled 12 defensive rebounds and helped the Skyhawks force 15 turnovers. The combination allowed Silverado to run its transition game to perfection. The Skyhawks had 10 transition layups against a team that appeared to be more athletic.

“We knew (Dorsey) would board and run,” Childress said. “We prepared for it, and it worked out for us today.”

James Lata added 11 points, seven in the fourth quarter, for the Skyhawks.

Jordan Mackie led Dorsey with 18 points.

Mojave 77, Marshall (Ore.) 55 — Anthony Marshall scored 23 of his 32 points in the first half as the Rattlers grabbed a 44-28 halftime lead and cruised.

Brandon Birdsong made his final seven shots and added 17 points for Mojave. Kevin James pulled down 13 rebounds.

Mitch Beckwith scored 26 points for the Minutemen before leaving with an injury. Beckwith fell and appeared to land chin-first when attempting to rebound a missed free throw.

Spring Valley 63, Tampa (Fla). Catholic 49 — Justin Omugun scored all of his 16 points in the first three quarters, and the Grizzlies pulled away.

Corey Clement added 15 points for Spring Valley, and Jesse Chippoletti and Tyler Lewis had 11 each. Lewis did all of his scoring in the second half.

Chaparral 59, Roosevelt (Calif.) 16 — LeAndre Dunbar led a balanced attack with 12 points as Chaparral was never threatened.

Roosevelt was held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 29-6 at the half.

Cheyenne 85, Ribet Academy (Calif.) 56 — Chris McCall poured in 26 points, making 10 of his final 11 shots, to lead the Desert Shields past Ribet Academy.

Demetric Williams made his first five shots and finished with 16 points for the Desert Shields. Ervin Leu scored 11.

Jon Conley fueled the Fightin’ Frogs with 26 points and 23 rebounds.

Canyon Country (Calif.) 82, Rancho 78 — Byron Bynum scored 31 points, but the Rams came up short against Canyon Country.

Mike Edwards led Canyon Country with 20 points.

Canyon Springs 67, Oakland Tech (Calif.) 53 — Terence Stanley and Chris Willis scored 14 points each, and the Pioneers used a 17-4 run in the third quarter to down Oakland Tech.

Donald Anderson and Curtis Stuckey each had 11 points for the Pioneers.

Durango 80, Mission Secondary (Canada) 24 — Dario Jokic scored all 23 of his points in the first half to help the hosts build a 45-12 halftime lead and cruise past Mission Secondary.

Marcus Falley added 15 points for Durango, which outscored Mission 31-5 in the second quarter. Brandon Dumble scored 11 points.
