Gorman’s Muhammad sets Nike Hoop Summit scoring mark
Bishop Gorman senior Shabazz Muhammad added to his already glowing resume Saturday.
Muhammad set a Nike Hoop Summit record by scoring 35 points and added nine rebounds, but the USA Junior Select team still dropped an 84-75 decision to the World team at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.
Muhammad’s 3-pointer with 4:50 to play in the fourth quarter made him the game’s all-time scoring leader, surpassing current Utah Jazz center Enes Kanter, who scored 34 points for the World in 2010.
The triple brought the USA to within 72-70.
Findlay Prep senior Anthony Bennett, of Canada, drained a long 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds to play to give the World team an 81-75 lead after Team USA attempted to rally from a 52-34 halftime deficit.
Bennett finished with seven points and 11 rebounds in limited action.
Canada’s Andrew Wiggins had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the World, and teammate Wang Zhelin of China added 19 points.
Muhammad, who is considering scholarship offers from Duke, Kentucky and UCLA, will announce his college decision Wednesday, his father, Ron Holmes, said last week.
