LAKE MEAD CLASSIC: The Meadows boys open tournament with two wins
December 4, 2015 - 12:08 am
The Meadows boys basketball coach Gary Hannig knows there will be high expectations this season after returning nine lettermen and four starters from last year's Division III state runner-up team.
His Mustangs look ready for the challenge.
Max Hisatake had 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks Thursday to lead the Mustangs to a 38-17 win over Fernley in the second game of pool play in the Lake Mead Holiday Classic at Lake Mead.
The Meadows (2-0) also beat Calvary Christian (Calif.), 70-28, earlier in the day to win its pool.
"I'm pretty happy with the way we came out and played the first two games," Hannig said. "Effort was really good. Execution was OK. … The (full-court) pressure looked good. We rebounded the ball really well, didn't have many turnovers. I thought we took care of the basketball and our shot selection was good."
The Meadows used its full-court pressure in the opening minutes of the second game to storm out to a 7-0 lead against the Vaqueros.
The Mustangs, who led 23-5 at the break, forced 13 first-half turnovers.
"The first two games, we got off to a quick start," Hannig said. "That really set the tone for each game. We created some turnovers that led to easy layups, which is always good."
Jake Epstein led all scorers with 12 points for The Meadows. The junior also had four rebounds and two steals, and teammate Ethan Fridman added 11 points and four assists for the Mustangs, who led by as many as 23 points in the second half.
