Late basket gives Miller Grove win over Findlay Prep

Aaron Augustin hit a floater in the lane with 11.4 seconds to go Thursday as the sixth-seeded Miller Grove (Georgia) basketball team upset No. 3 seed Findlay Prep 67-65 in the quarterfinals of the National High School Invitational at Christ the King High School in New York.

Findlay Prep guard Skylar Mays, who finished with a game-high 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting, missed a long 3-pointer from the right wing as time expired.

Mays, a Louisiana State signee, made a contested layup to give the Pilots (28-2) a 63-62 lead with 1:50 to go, but Miller Grove’s Aidan Saunders answered with a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 65-63.

Mays also hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 65 with 40 seconds remaining.

P.J. Washington had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Markus Howard scored 13 points for Findlay Prep, which got nine points and six rebounds from UNLV recruit Carlos Johnson. The Pilots committed 11 first-half turnovers and trailed 35-27 at halftime, but led 49-47 going into the fourth quarter.

Alterique Gilbert, the tournament’s lone McDonald’s All American and a Connecticut recruit, had 20 points, four assists and two steals for Miller Grove. He was 7-for-17 from the field, but made two consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to give the Wolverines a 59-54 lead with 3:45 to go.

Raylon Richardson had 12 points, and Colin Young scored 10 for Miller Grove (31-2), which will face second-seeded Oak Hill Academy (Virginia) in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Friday.
