Looking ahead at the week in high school sports
Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports events.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Tuesday — Coronado at Bishop Gorman, 6:30 p.m.
A rematch of last year’s state final, which Gorman won, 83-63. The Cougars return four starters and added three talented transfers to the mix this season. For the first time in recent memory, the Gaels won’t have a post presence.
Wednesday — Foothill at Las Vegas, 6:30 p.m.
Two traditionally strong programs, will face off in this non-league matchup. The Falcons will bring a strong backcourt with Jeron Bodin, Jace Roquemore and Marvin Coleman, while the Wildcats will rely on forward Marquise Raybon.
Friday — Bishop Gorman vs. Chino Hills (California), 4:30 p.m.
The second big test of the week for the Gaels, as they take on high-scoring Chino Hills in the Hoophall West event in Scottsdale, Arizona. Chino Hills’ LiAngelo Ball already has posted a 72-point game this season.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Wednesday — Arbor View at Shadow Ridge, 5 p.m.
Two teams expected to battle for the final postseason berths from the Northwest League meet early on. These games count in the standings just as much as the ones in February, right?
Thursday-Saturday — Las Vegas Invitational at Bishop Gorman
Arbor View, Coronado and Faith Lutheran join the host Gaels in the seven-team tournament. The championship game is set for noon on Saturday.
Friday — Spring Valley at Centennial, 5 p.m.
A possible sneak peak at the Class 4A Sunset Region final. The Grizzlies have been one of the area’s top programs the past two seasons and will find out where they stand against nationally ranked Centennial. The Bulldogs made 12 3-pointers and ran away with last year’s meeting, 89-49.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Monday — Boulder City at Las Vegas, 4:30 p.m.
The Wildcats, who returned seven starters from a season ago, will look to knock off the top Class 3A team in Southern Nevada. The Eagles lost a lot to graduation, but still should be in contention for another title under coach Chris Morelli.
Tuesday — Green Valley at Palo Verde, 4:30 p.m.
Sunrise Region powerhouse vs. Sunset powerhouse. Since the sport began in the 2012-13 season, both of these schools have been perennial top teams in Southern Nevada. This year should be no different.
Wednesday — Cheyenne at Cimarron-Memorial, 4:30 p.m.
Though they play in Class 3A, the Desert Shields might have the most talented team in all of Southern Nevada. The Spartans, who regularly sit atop the Northwest League, will see firsthand in this rivalry clash.
WRESTLING
Wednesday — Centennial Quad Meet, 4 p.m
Centennial is the host and Liberty will be there, but eyes will be on the meeting of Bishop Gorman and Las Vegas. The Gaels finished fifth at the state tournament last season while the Wildcats finished second in the Sunrise Region.
Friday-Saturday - Mustang Stampede at Shadow Ridge
The two-day event features a meeting of the Sunset Region’s best. Arbor View (finished first last season), Shadow Ridge (second), Cimarron-Memorial (third) and Centennial (fourth) will attend, as will Durango and Bonanza, which finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
