NOTES: Desert Oasis’ Coleman taking calls for ‘right fit’

Aamondae Coleman held the phone to his ear and listened attentively as the recruiter on the other end explained the school’s scholarship situation.

After approximately 15 minutes of a largely one-sided conversation, the senior forward for Desert Oasis’ boys basketball team hung up.

“He did a lot of talking,” Diamondbacks coach Ryan Fretz said. “That’s good.”

Coleman, a first-team all-state selection, is one of the top uncommitted senior boys basketball players in Southern Nevada and has listened to pitches from several college coaches in recent months.

With the spring signing period set to begin April 13, the son of former NBA first-round pick Marcus Fizer is drawing interest from a handful of schools and remains hopeful of landing a scholarship offer.

“I think there’s a right fit out there for him, whatever level it’s at,” Fretz said. “I think there’s a coach that needs a player that’s dedicated and spiritual like Aamondae is and sees the potential of what he’s going to be when he’s a junior or senior in college, what he can bring to a team like that. It’s just a matter of time.”

Coleman averaged 18.1 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots as a senior for the Diamondbacks, who went 19-10 and reached the Division I Sunset Region semifinals. He shot 55 percent from the field and was a first-team All-Northwest League pick.

“I think I proved I can play hard, no matter the circumstance,” Coleman said. “I’ve just been in the gym, working hard ever since the season ended because I know I have to up my game for the college level. I’ve been praying and staying patient and hoping the right opportunity comes, and I’ll try my best to take advantage of it.”

The 6-foot-5-inch Coleman primarily played inside as a power forward for Desert Oasis, but he projects as a small forward at the college level.

“Right now, he’s more of a ‘tweener,’ ” Fretz admitted.

Coleman is scheduled to visit North Texas in three weeks and has been in contact with Houston Baptist, which plays in the Southland Conference.

Coleman, who plans to major in business management, also has heard from Savannah State (Georgia) and Utah Valley, along with Division II schools Dixie State (Utah) and Nebraska-Kearney.

An NCAA-approved recruiting period runs Thursday through Sunday, and Coleman will play with the Las Vegas Punishers travel team during evaluation periods from April 15 to 17 and April 22 to 24 in an effort to impress recruiters.

“I will definitely work my hardest at all times and always put the program first,” Coleman said. “I know in the end I’ll end up in the right place.”
