NOTES: Gaels’ Muhammad still weighing college scholarship offers

Not every member of the Muhammad family is ready to make a decision about his basketball future.

Bishop Gorman senior Rashad Muhammad did not sign a national letter of intent Wednesday, the first day of the spring signing period, and Gaels coach Grant Rice said the 6-foot-5-inch shooting guard is still considering five schools.

Muhammad is scheduled to visit San Jose State this weekend. He will then choose between the Spartans, who are set to join the Mountain West in the fall, Cal State Fullerton, San Diego, Utah State and Wyoming.

Muhammad’s older brother, Shabazz, a freshman at UCLA, declared for the NBA Draft on Tuesday.

“Some of these schools are a really good fit for him,” Rice said. “He’s a player who can step right in on the offensive end and score right away.”

Muhammad was a second-team all-state selection after helping the Gaels to the Division I state title. He averaged 19.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

Meanwhile, Gorman senior guard Trey Kennedy is considering Mercer, Northeastern, Southern Utah and St. Francis (N.Y.). Ball State and Cal State Fullerton are expected to scout Kennedy at an AAU tournament this weekend, Rice said.

The signing period for Division I ends May 15.

ON THE DOTTED LINE — Bishop Gorman point guard Tonishia Childress, the Review-Journal Division I girls basketball Player of the Year, signed a letter of intent with Boise State.

Childress averaged 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 6.6 assists as a senior and helped the Gaels reach the Division I state final.

Guard April Rivers, who led Gorman in scoring at 15.8 points per game, signed with Austin Peay State.
Las Vegas High boys basketball player Juwan Major signed with Southern Utah. He averaged a team-best 13.6 points.

Also, Las Vegas place-kicker Jay Mattox signed with Texas-El Paso.

FLAG FOOTBALL HONORS — Running back Markie Henderson of Palo Verde was voted Offensive Player of the Year by the Southern Nevada Flag Football Coaches Association.

Western’s Cathyanna Valentine claimed the Defensive Player of the Year award, and Joe Bowler of Virgin Valley was the overall coach of the year.

Palo Verde’s Kevin Hagood (Northwest), Green Valley’s Jason Clark (Northeast), Western’s Jeff Hobbs (Southwest) and Foothill’s Cynthia Guzman (Southeast) were the league coaches of the year.

CANNON TAKES SECOND — Green Valley sophomore Sean Cannon finished second in the 120-pound class at the Western Junior Regional Greco-Roman competition at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Cannon qualified for the Nevada National Team, which will compete at the USA Wrestling/ASICS Junior National Championships from July 12 to 20 at Fargo, N.D.

Donovan Peek, a junior from Green Valley, was fourth at 160.

PILOTS, GAELS IN FINAL POLL — Findlay Prep’s loss April 5 in the semifinals of the National High School Invitational proved costly as the Pilots finished No. 3 in the final USA Today Super 25 poll.

Findlay Prep  (35-1) entered the tournament No. 1.

Bishop Gorman (29-3) was ranked No. 15 by USA Today.
