RECRUITING: Findlay Prep sophomore commits to UNLV
December 15, 2010 - 6:35 pm
As a point guard, Nigel Williams-Goss is comfortable making quick decisions that impact a team. The Findlay Prep sophomore made a decisive move with an early oral commitment to UNLV.
Williams-Goss and his parents met with Rebels coach Lon Kruger and his staff Tuesday, and the Findlay Prep coaches announced Williams-Goss’ intentions Wednesday.
“UNLV was always at the top of my list,” Williams-Goss said. “I knew this was where I wanted to end up, and I didn’t want to lead on other schools that were recruiting me.”
Williams-Goss, a 6-foot-4-inch native of Portland, Ore., is averaging 15.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game for the Pilots. He is shooting 65 percent from the field and 90.9 percent on free throws.
All Star Sports scouting analyst Bob Gibbons said Williams-Goss ranks among the top 25 prospects in the Class of 2013.
“It’s a very good commitment for the Rebels,” Gibbons said. “He’s a very advanced player for his age. He can shoot the 3-pointer or he can take it to the rim.”
Williams-Goss and his family moved to Las Vegas before his freshman year. He is a cousin of UNLV sophomore Mike Moser, who’s also from Portland. Moser, a 6-8 forward, transferred from UCLA and is redshirting this season.
Findlay Prep coach Michael Peck said Williams-Goss’ comfort zone with UNLV led to the early decision.
“That was 100 percent it. His family is rooted here now,” Peck said. “Nigel is more of a trailblazer than a follower. Him coming down here at his age, it gave an indication that he’s a guy who will do what he feels is best and is always thinking about his future.”
Williams-Goss said he had an up-close look at Kruger’s program and was not interested in a prolonged recruiting process.
“When I made my decision, I wanted it to be an educated one and know what I was getting into,” he said. “I wanted to go somewhere I was genuinely wanted, and no one gave me that feeling better than UNLV.”
The Pilots (14-1) play at Yates (Texas) at 6 p.m. Thursday in a game to be televised on ESPN. Findlay is ranked No. 5 in the nation by USA Today.
