ROUNDUP: Boulder City boys slip past Meadows

Boulder City boys basketball coach Bobby Reese wore the face of a losing coach as he left the floor Friday night.

His team had just beaten The Meadows 80-66 on the road, but Reese wasn’t sold.

“We have to play with greater defensive intensity,” said Reese, whose team trailed for most of the first half. “We didn’t have that intensity in the first half. In the second half we did. It gets frustrating.”

The Eagles’ Shane Levin managed 22 points, five rebounds and two steals, but even he admitted his team did not play up to expectations.

“There was a lot of joking and fooling around before the game,” said Levin, whose team beat the Mustangs by 16 points in a tournament game Dec. 5. “I think everyone was feeling a little cocky.”

It showed early, with Max Newman scoring 11 of his team-high 20 points to help The Meadows build a 31-21 lead late in the first half.

Momentum began to turn in the final minute of the half when the Eagles’ Preston Swasey made a layup and a foul shot to ignite a 9-0 spurt. The Mustangs clung to a 35-30 lead at the half.

“I had a nice, polite conversation with my players at halftime,” Reese said.

Boulder City (7-3) responded by taking over in the third quarter, dominating the backboards 11-2 and going ahead for good on a 3-pointer by Joey Western. An 11-0 run gave the Eagles a 54-47 lead, and The Meadows’ six-man roster began to show signs of fatigue.

Western had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and teammate Alex Dillon added 12 of his 13 points in the second half.

Garrett Gosse scored 18 for The Meadows (3-6).

Canyon Springs 65, Highlands Ranch (Colo.) 59 — At the Cherry Creek Classic in Englewood, Coio., Adrian Snow came off the bench to score 21 points, including 13 in the second half, and grab eight rebounds to lift the Pioneers past Highlands Ranch.

Michael Thompson added 13 points and Antonio Snow 10 for Canyon Springs.

Joe Sullivan led Highlands Ranch with 21 points.

West (Utah) 60, Centennial 47 — At Cedar City, Utah, Centennial rallied from a 12-point first-quarter deficit, but came up short against West, which put away the game with a 19-6 run in the final quarter.

Ben Vozzola led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Beau Scarlett added 15 points.

Pahranagat Valley 65, White Pine 51 — At Alamo, Cody Hosier scored 17 of his 29 points in the first half, helping the Panthers build a 35-22 halftime lead on their way to the win.

Michael Johnson led White Pine with 21 points. Wade Wilkinson added 16 points for the Bobcats.

In the Lake Havasu (Ariz.) Tournament:

Needles 74, Kingman (Ariz.) 67 — Darra Russell recorded a triple-double with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Mustangs past Kingman.

Stevie Kidd poured in 32 points for Needles. Anthony Ramos added 11 points.

Needles 81, Wickenburg (Ariz.) 48 — Kidd scored 27 points as the Mustangs routed Wickenburg.

Russell added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ramos scored 10, and every Needles player scored at least one point.

Yuma (Ariz.) 72, Needles 58 — Kidd scored 20 points, but the Mustangs fell to Yuma, which improved to 10-1 overall.

Russell had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Needles.

At the Battle Mountain Tournament:

Pyramid Lake 40, Round Mountain 36 — The Lakers took a 27-18 halftime lead and held on.

Clint Wilson had 19 points to lead Round Mountain, and teammate Will Sweeney grabbed 12 rebounds.

Battle Mountain 60, Round Mountain 51 — The host team held off the Knights.
