SIERRA VISTA TOURNEY: Videaux sparks Valley boys to win
December 22, 2008 - 12:59 pm
Jimmy Videaux probably won’t ever make a huge impact in the scoring column.
But his presence on the floor can make a big difference for Valley.
The senior forward, who suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in the final football game of the season, does the little things to help the Vikings.
On Monday, Videaux had all six of his points in the fourth quarter and finished with 10 rebounds as Valley downed Las Vegas 67-64 to move into the semifinals of the Sierra Vista Invitational.
“He’s the toughest kid in our school,” Valley coach Brian Farnsworth said. “We just feed off him. He got a couple tip-backs, got his hands on the ball. He’s playing on one leg. His heart and guts kind of bled off on the rest of the kids today.”
Videaux wasn’t the only player crashing the boards late for the undersized Vikings. Keenyn Thomas, a 6-foot-1-inch sophomore, had a rebound bucket with 1:53 to play to put Valley up 63-62.
Videaux added a layup with 33 seconds left, and sophomore Khristian Kirkwood nailed two foul shots with 10 seconds left to seal the win.
With 6-3 Alonzo Blount, Valley’s closest thing to a true post presence, in foul trouble, Videaux came off the bench to grab seven boards in the first half.
“He may not score a lot, but his tenaciousness and the way he plays rubs off on these young kids, and they don’t have a choice but to play hard,” Farnsworth said.
“I wish I had 15 kids with his heart. We’d be pretty good.”
Johnquez Brooks had 18 points to lead the Vikings, but scored just two after halftime. Thomas helped pick up the slack in the second half, scoring 10 of his 16 points after the break.
Kirkwood added 14 points for Valley.
Tony Eackles led Las Vegas with 16 points. George Sanico added 12 points and Demetrius Johnson 11 for the Wildcats.
Valley, which starts three sophomores, hopes to continue to build once league play resumes after the holiday break.
“It’s a young team, and we’re just beginning to find our chemistry a little bit,” Farnsworth said. “We’re growing."
