SNOWED OUT: Snowstorm wreaks havoc on schedule

The Clark County School District postponed all of its athletic events Wednesday due to a rare snowstorm in the valley.

An e-mail sent out by the school district late Wednesday afternoon read, “Due to transportation and safety concerns, athletic events are canceled for tonight.”

The postponements only partially affected Bishop Gorman’s boys basketball tournament, which started with two scheduled games Wednesday.

The game between Dominguez (Calif.) and Spring Valley was played. The second game, scheduled to be between Foothill and Buchanan (Calif.), was canceled. Buchanan’s team was unable to travel to Nevada on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the six schools scheduled to host girls soccer games postponed the matches.

Six girls basketball league games and six boys basketball league games also were postponed in Class 4A. Wednesday night also was scheduled to be the opening night of league matches in wrestling.

The weather also hampered travel plans for basketball teams scheduled to play in out-of-state tournaments.

Centennial’s girls spent most of Wednesday afternoon at  McCarran International Airport waiting for a flight that never took off. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play a 1:30 p.m. game Thursday in the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.

“We’re miserable,” Centennial coach Karen Weitz said. “We only have half of our luggage. We can’t drive because we didn’t plan for that. We were supposed to leave at 2:30 p.m. and now we’re hoping to get out on a 6:30 (a.m.) flight tomorrow.”

As of Wednesday night, no decision had been made on today’s athletic events. School was called off for Thursday.

When reschedule dates are confirmed, they will be posted on nevadapreps.com.
