TIP-OFF CLASSIC: Centennial reserves get most of work in opening rout

Centennial boys basketball coach Todd Allen knew his bench would log heavy minutes Thursday.

He just didn’t realize the Bulldogs’ substitutes would play almost the entire game.

Centennial scored the first 14 points and routed Robert Bateman (Canada) 71-31 in the opening round of the Legacy Tip-Off Classic.

“(Wednesday) night we had a real physical game with Coronado, and we were hoping to come in here, get a quick start and maybe get a little bit of rest,” Allen said. “We’re going to play six games in five days, so we were hoping for this.”

Cameron Trailer finished with a game-high 10 points to go with five rebounds and two steals as 14 of the 16 players on Centennial’s roster scored. Terrance Traylor added eight points for the Bulldogs (3-0), who will meet Mojave in the quarterfinals at 6:50 p.m. today at Legacy.

The Bulldogs scored six points in the first 30 seconds, and Centennial’s starters went to the bench with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter and didn’t return.

Darrian Traylor, a UC Irvine signee, produced six points and two assists in his limited minutes, and sophomore standout Troy Brown had four points, one assist and one block.

Kamakana Winquist came off the bench to provide seven points, seven rebounds and three blocks for Centennial, and Dominic Jackson-Anasson notched six points, six rebounds and three blocks.

The Bulldogs led 46-16 at halftime and by 45 points in the fourth quarter. A running clock was used for the final 10:35.

“We were trying to execute our plays, that’s the main thing,” Allen said. “We just want to see them develop. That’s the key, using these tournaments to do that, to get us ready for league play. It’s good to have one of these games once in a while, because those kids do work hard in practice, and you want to reward them.”

Jackson-Anasson provided the game’s two highlights. On the first possession of the second quarter, the 6-foot-8-inch senior caught an alley-oop pass from Terrance Traylor and dunked. Then, early in the third quarter, Jackson-Anasson converted a fast-break dunk off a nice feed from Winquist.

“Dom’s new to our program, so getting him some looks was important,” Allen said. “He’s right there. We just need him to buy into the rebounding role and play good defense, and everything else will come together for him.”

Keenan Adams-Barausse led Robert Bateman with seven points.

Mojave 69, Lowry 38 — Melvin Irvey led three players in double figures with 13 points, and the Rattlers blew out the Buckaroos.

Darryl Adams finished with 11 points, and Malik Abbott scored 10 for Mojave.

Lowry, which advanced to the Division I-A state semifinals last season, was held scoreless in the second quarter and trailed 37-13 at halftime.

Nathan Lutzow led the Buckaroos with 10 points.

Sierra Vista 48, Coral Academy 44 — Maka Ellis scored 15 points, and the Mountain Lions held off the Falcons.

Maui SeraJosef added 10 points for Sierra Vista, which led 20-10 after the first quarter but was outscored in each of the final three quarters.

Sierra Vista advanced to the quarterfinals and will play Wasatch Academy (Utah) on Friday. Coral Academy takes on Faith Lutheran in the consolation bracket.

Ryan Dijno led Coral Academy with 10 points, while Isaiah Buck and Brennan Rosales finished with nine points apiece.

Wasatch Academy (Utah) 74, Faith Lutheran 31 — John Molchon scored nine points in the Crusaders loss to the Tigers.

Faith Lutheran trailed 44-14 at halftime against the two-time defending Utah 2A state champions.

Cody John and Jackson Rowe each had 18 points, and Koby McEwen added 17 points for Wasatch.

Clark 66, Churchill County 35 — Carter Olsen made three of his team’s five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points as the Chargers used a big second-quarter run to rout the Greenwave.

Deshawn Wilson had 14 points, and Darius Jackson added 10 points for Clark, which will face Clovis East (Calif.) in the quarterfinals.

The Chargers outscored Churchill County 21-2 in the second quarter after the teams were tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Jeff Evett led Churchill County with 12 points.

Clovis East (Calif.) 82, Virgin Valley 56 — Keegan Biasi, Quentin Smith and Cody Burnside each scored 10 points for the Bulldogs in their loss to the Timberwolves.

Virgin Valley will meet Churchill County on Friday in the consolation bracket.

Jaime Attondo led Clovis East with 16 points. Trey Semien had 15 points for the Timberwolves, who led 52-30 at halftime.

Villa Park (Calif.) 58, Spring Valley 42 — Travis Walton scored 12 points in the Grizzlies’ loss to the Spartans.

Spring Valley will meet the loser of Friday’s opening-round game between Sunrise Mountain and Legacy in the consolation bracket.

Carl Albert chipped in with seven points for Spring Valley, which trailed by seven points at halftime before Villa Park used a 14-5 run in the third quarter to pull away.

Caleb Banuelos hit six 3-pointers and had 17 of his game-high 20 points in the first half for the Spartans.

Legacy 72, Southern Australia 41 — Christian Solis had 19 points, and Brody Olenslager added 12 points as the host Longhorns cruised in an out-of-bracket game.
