TRI-STATE CLASSIC: Skyhawks hold off Coral Academy

Silverado's boys basketball team completed a 2-0 start on the first day of the Tri-State Holiday Invitational at Desert Oasis, by hanging on to defeat Coral Academy 51-50 on Monday.

After trailing by six in the first half, the Skyhawks used a third-quarter surge to take a six-point lead into the final quarter, then survived Coral Academy senior Brennan Rosales' shot at the buzzer, which caromed off the left side of the rim as time expired.

Matt Arnold had 15 points to lead the Skyhawks (10-3), who were 20-for-49 (40.8 percent) from the floor. Tyric Johnson and Errol Newman each added nine points for Silverado.

"We've been working on our shooting ever since I got the job," first-year Silverado coach Shelby Jones said. "I felt our skill level was a little bit low when I took over this summer. We worked really hard to improve that: our shooting, shot selection, finishing, things of that nature.

"We're getting better but we still have some bad habits, where we take some bad shots at times, and even lack confidence at times in our own abilities. It's a work in progress. We're working at it, but we have our moments."

Down 28-27 at halftime, the Skyhawks went on a 14-7 run behind five points from Arnold and nine points from Newman. The third quarter proved to be Silverado's best period, as it shot 7 of 16 from the floor, led by Newman, who had three 3-pointers and another field goal.

But the Falcons (5-6) wouldn't go away, as they held Silverado to just three points over the first seven minutes of the final quarter, while pulling within 49-47 with 1:24 left in the game.

Silverado's Kris Coe hit two free throws with just less than a minute to play, extending the lead to 51-47. Coral Academy's Ryan Djino hit 1 of 2 free throws with 36 seconds to play, making it 51-48.

Silverado missed three opportunities to extend the lead at the foul line, and Falcons senior Isaiah Spears hit two free throws to get Coral Academy within 51-50.

With 5.1 seconds left in the game, Kaleb Robinson brought the ball up court and dished to Rosales down the left side of the court, in front of two Silverado defenders. Rosales shook the two Skyhawks and had a good look when he pulled up for the potential winning shot but couldn't convert.

"It was drawn up to take a timeout after we got over half (court), but we couldn't take the timeout," Coral Academy coach Todd Robinson said. "We had a good look for our senior, and we gave him the opportunity to take the shot if he wanted it.
