VEGAS INVITATIONAL: Logan’s fast start powers Bengals to title

Jamal Logan’s clutch free throws lifted Bonanza’s boys basketball team to a one-point victory in the Vegas Invitational semifinals on Monday.

The junior’s encore might have been better against Chadwick (Calif.) in the championship game.

Logan scored 17 of his 26 points in the first half Tuesday to lead the Bengals to a 72-51 win over the Dolphins at Mountain View. He was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 18 points in four contests.

“First of all, Jamal is a great kid,” Bengals coach Eric Markuson said. “But he’s a great player and he’s one of the leaders on our team. We need him and DaVonta Price to get going every game. Those are kind of our two pistons in the engine. When those two get going, everyone else seems to feed off that. They mean the world to this team.”

Logan added four rebounds and four steals for Bonanza, which led 34-26 at halftime before using a 14-1 run to start the third quarter. The Bengals held the Dolphins without a field goal until 2:13 to go in the third.

“I told them to keep their foots on the gas,” Markuson said. “We were up eight (at halftime) and I said, ‘Don’t let up. They’re a good team’ … When they decide that they want to get after it, they can get after it. That was the key, defense and rebounding.”

Logan had 11 points in the opening quarter, including three 3-pointers, and the game was tied at 15 after one. But Logan, along with his teammates, cranked it up on defense to cause 15 turnovers the rest of the way. Chadwick finished with 18 turnovers, and shot just 15-for-50 (30 percent) because of the Bonanza defense.

Bonanza (9-4) held a 54-29 lead midway through the third quarter. The run was highlighted by a steal and breakaway dunk by Price with 5:00 minutes to go in the third. The Dolphins chipped away in the fourth, but the margin would get no closer than 12 points.

“I have high expectations for these guys,” Markuson said. “They worked really hard this summer and we wanted to win this (tournament). They worked very hard and we knew it would be a fight. There are some good teams in here.”

Price added 12 points, three assists and two blocked shots for Bonanza, which also got 10 points from D.J. Fletcher.
