3A GIRLS: Spring Creek nets third crown in four years

Spring Creek placed four players in double figures as the Spartans rolled to a 69-42 win over Lowry for the Class 3A girls state title at the Orleans Arena on Saturday.

It was Spring Creek’s third state title in four years.

“It’s not a dynasty, just girls that work hard,” Spring Creek coach Sarah Arendt said. “They work hard every chance they can get, especially in the offseason. So it’s nice to see it pay off.”

The Spartans turned the ball over 18 times in the first half to help Lowry stay close. But Kyla Siri hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the first half to give Spring Creek a 31-24 lead, and the Spartans opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take control.

Spring Creek was 9-for-12 from the field in the third quarter as it took a 51-33 lead.

Mary Suing led Spring Creek with 17 points and nine rebounds. Lacy Rider (13), Andrea Empey (11) and Stacy Kerr (11) also scored in double figures for the Spartans.

Julia Dufurrena led Lowry with 10 points.
