4A GIRLS: Williams guides Reed to first title in nearly 20 years

RENO — Gabby Williams scored 24 points to lead Reed to the Class 4A girls state basketball championship with a 56-51 victory over Reno on Friday at UNR’s Lawlor Events Center.

Reed (23-2) scored the first nine points, but Reno battled back to tie it in the fourth quarter. The Raiders, though, did just enough down the stretch to secure their first title since winning a 3A crown in 1993.

Nyasha LeSure and Tyler Sumpter each added 11 points for the Raiders, who went 4-0 against Reno this season.

Gigi Hascheff scored nine of her 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead Reno (27-6). Shannon Gough supplied 14 points, all in the second half, for the Huskies, who were bidding for their first title since 2001.

Reed became the first Northern Nevada team to win a large-school crown since Reno’s last title.
