Bonanza earns home opener in Sunset playoffs

Bonanza’s girls made no bones about wanting to host a playoff game.

The Bengals blitzed Sierra Vista 56-35 on Friday to wrap up the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A Southwest League and a home quarterfinal berth.

Bonanza, which would’ve dropped to No. 3 and gone on the road if it lost, will host Northwest No. 3 seed Legacy in the Sunset Region playoffs at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The pairings in all four classes in Southern Nevada are set, pending approval by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.

All Class 4A quarterfinals are at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

In the Sunset, Northwest champion Centennial hosts Southwest No. 4 Sierra Vista; Northwest No. 2 Palo Verde hosts Southwest No. 3 Durango; and Southwest champion Bishop Gorman hosts Northwest No. 4 Cheyenne.

In the Sunrise Region, Northeast champ Desert Pines hosts Southeast No. 4 seed Coronado; Northeast No. 2 Valley hosts Southeast No. 3 Liberty; Southeast champion Green Valley hosts Northeast No. 4 Las Vegas; and Southeast No. 2 Silverado hosts Northeast No. 3 Eldorado.

Eldorado earned the No. 3 seed with its upset win over Desert Pines on Friday. The Sundevils and Las Vegas tied at 7-5 in league play and split their head-to-head meetings, but Eldorado’s victory over Desert Pines gave it the edge in beaten opponents’ points.

In Class 3A semifinals Thursday at Desert Oasis, top-seeded Virgin Valley takes on fourth-seeded Faith Lutheran, and second-seeded Boulder City meets No. 3 Moapa Valley.

In Class 2A, Needles’ victory over Lincoln County on Friday gave it the No. 1 seed for the Southern League playoffs, which start Feb. 20 at Desert Oasis. Needles meets White Pine in one semifinal, and Mountain View plays Lincoln County in the other.

In Class 1A, the quarterfinal pairings are set with all four games taking place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Top-seeded Lund hosts Henderson International; No. 2 seed Pahranagat Valley hosts No. 7 seed Trinity; No. 3 seed Round Mountain hosts No. 6 seed Lake Mead; and No. 4 seed Beatty hosts No. 5 seed Tonopah.

Beatty, Tonopah and Lake Mead all finished 5-4, and the tiebreaker came down to point differential in head-to-head games.

Beatty, which lost to Lake Mead by four Friday, beat Tonopah by seven to have a net of plus-3.

Lake Mead, which lost to Tonopah by four, was a net zero. Tonopah was a net minus-3 points.
Beatty won the tiebreaker and the No. 4 seed.

Lake Mead and Tonopah then revert to a two-team tiebreaker, won by Tonopah because it won the head-to-head matchup.

Had the Eagles scored two more points Friday, they would have been the No. 4 seed and been at home for the first round.
