Ellenberg tops 2,000 points as Gorman girls rout Sierra Vista

Bishop Gorman’s girls basketball program is filled with memorable accomplishments.
Among those are three state championships and a handful of players who have gone on to play Division I college basketball.
But no one had ever scored 2,000 career points in a Gorman jersey.
Until Tuesday.
Aaryn Ellenberg scored 35 points, bumping her total to 2,005, in the Gaels’ 85-52 win at Sierra Vista.
“It’s a great accomplishment,” Gorman coach Sheryl Krmpotich said. “You know when she has the ball something good is going to happen.”
Ellenberg entered the game at 1,970 career points and had hoped her milestone would come Thursday when the Gaels host Clark.
“I wanted to be the first one to do it,” Ellenberg said. “But I was trying to hold back because my mom wasn’t here, and I wanted her to be at the game when I did it.”
Instead, the 5-foot-7-inch senior guard scored 17 points in the first quarter and had 25 at the half. She entered the fourth quarter at 29 points and hit the milestone shot — her seventh 3-pointer of the game — from the left wing with 4:12 to play.
Though it’s believed there have been several more, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s record book lists only four career 2,000-point scorers in girls basketball. Danika Sharp of West Wendover joined that list earlier this year.
“It takes a lot of work,” Ellenberg said.

Lindy La Rocque owns what is believed to be the state record with 2,678 points for Durango from 2004 to 2008.
It wasn’t all about scoring, for Ellenberg, who added nine rebounds, five on the offensive end.

"She can jump out of the gym," Krmpotich said.
Gorman (19-5, 13-0 Southwest) peppered the Mountain Lions with 3-point shots, making 11 of 31.
Jeanette Jackson led Sierra Vista (18-7, 11-2) with 23 points.
