GATOR CLASSIC: Skyhawks hold Bengals scoreless for 12 minutes in rout

Silverado girls basketball coach Dean Bosch wasted two timeouts during a span of 1 minute, 10 seconds in the second quarter. After the second one, Bosch warned his team they may need the timeouts at the end of the game.

“We just had to remind them that this is probably going to be a close game,” Bosch said. “I didn’t envision us having a 26-point lead.”

The Skyhawks held Bonanza without a point for nearly 12 minutes and coasted to a 44-27 victory Monday in pool play of the Gator Winter Classic at Green Valley.

Monet Salazar had 10 points and four rebounds for Silverado (6-6), which plays Santa Fe Christian (Calif.) for the top seed in Pool A at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament continues with bracket play Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Our big thing is we’re a pretty good team when we play together and we execute,” Bosch said. “Where we’ve been struggling this year is we get a lead and we kind of forget about the team aspect.”

Alyssa Powers, who led Bonanza (8-5) with 19 points and 12 rebounds, drove the lane and scored with 3:20 remaining in the second quarter to cut the Skyhawks’ lead to 15-10. The Bengals didn’t score again until Brooklyn Savage went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line with 7:38 left in the fourth quarter to make the score 36-11.

Silverado outscored the Bengals 19-0 in the third quarter as Bonanza missed all six of its field-goal attempts and committed seven of its 24 turnovers. The Bengals finished 7-for-37 from the floor overall.

“We’ve been focusing so hard on our offense lately that we’ve been neglecting defense in practice,” Bosch said. “So, we challenged the girls to step up, even though we haven’t spent a lot of time defensively. … I think the third quarter we did a great job of that.”

Deja Siaki finished with nine points and collected seven steals for Silverado, and teammate Rachel Tretina added nine points and four boards. Jessica Chamberlain pulled down seven rebounds as the Skyhawks outrebounded Bonanza 42-36.

Silverado led by 23 points early in the fourth quarter before Powers scored 10 straight for the Bengals, capping the run with a 3-pointer to make the score 37-24 with 4:20 remaining. Her driving basket two minutes later cut the Bengals’ deficit to 40-27, but Silverado scored the final four points.

“That’s kind of been our Achilles’ heel,” Bosch said. “We’ll play real good for stretches, and then we kind of stop playing, give up some leads and then make it a lot closer than it needs to be.”

Green Valley 62, Shadow Ridge 58 — Gracelle Garcia had 13 points, and Ellee Barton scored 12 as the host Gators held off the Mustangs.

Green Valley led 56-37 early in the fourth quarter before Shadow Ridge went on an 18-2 run to get back in the game. Aubree Nish’s steal and layup cut the Gators’ lead to 58-53 with 1:02 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Alexa Martins hit a short pull-up jumper in transition to make the score 58-55 with 49.6 seconds left.

Barton hit two free throws with 36.8 seconds left to give Green Valley a 60-55 lead. The Gators finished 20-for-38 from the foul line.

Assana King led Shadow Ridge with 16 points, and teammate Tamara Gisendaner supplied 10 points. Shadow Ridge’s Ciera DaPra made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the final margin down to four points.

The Gators, who had 10 players score, opened the second quarter on an 18-5 run and went ahead 32-24 on a 3-pointer by Garcia with 1:25 remaining in the first half. Green Valley outscored the Mustangs 42-19 in the middle quarters after Shadow Ridge owned a 16-8 lead at the end of the first.

Las Vegas 44, Coral Academy 16 — Teconna Dyer scored 11 of her 17 points in the first quarter, and the Wildcats beat the Falcons.

Las Vegas led 24-0 after the first quarter.

Alessandra Ponce had eight points for Coral Academy.

Mainland (New Zealand) 52, Green Valley 39 — Brooke Haney finished with 10 points, but the host Gators couldn’t overcome an early deficit and lost to the Eagles.

Yamilei Rodriguez had nine points, and Barton added eight points for Green Valley. The Gators trailed 22-12 at halftime and couldn’t get closer than seven points, which they did on two occasions in the fourth quarter.

Green Valley cut the Eagles’ lead to 47-39 late in the fourth quarter on Barton’s jumper, but Mainland answered as Aleisha Ruske scored on a backdoor layup with a little more than a minute remaining to restore the Eagles’ 10-point advantage.

Ruske and Tessa Stewart-Morrison each had 18 points to lead Mainland, which arrived in Las Vegas on Monday afternoon after missing its first game of the tournament on Saturday.

Buena (Calif.) 69, Sunrise Mountain 34 — Ayla Diaz had seven points in the Miners’ loss to the Bulldogs.

Tyrah Lee and Shayne Siegel each had five points for Sunrise Mountain, which led 12-10 after the first quarter.

Amy Jameson finished with 15 points for Buena, which went on a 17-3 run in the second quarter. Claire Hansen and Skyler Ramos had 10 points apiece as nine players scored for the Bulldogs.

Mainland (New Zealand) 66, Cimarron-Memorial 26 — Ashli Tyus had 12 points for the Spartans in their loss to the Eagles.

The game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter before Mainland took control with a 20-4 second-quarter run. The Eagles went 29-for-39 from the free-throw line compared to a 1-for-14 effort by Cimarron.

Stewart-Morrison had 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second quarter for Mainland, and teammate Nicole Ruske added 10 points.

Santa Fe Christian (Calif.) 63, Western 29 — Destiny Gonzalez had 16 points in the Warriors’ loss to the Eagles.

Capricia Pierce finished with 11 points for Western, which was outscored 28-8 in the second half.

Megan Franke had 25 points, and California Cubel added 19 points for Santa Fe Christian.

Rancho 51, Dimond (Alaska) 44 — Tatianna Lee scored 17 points, and Maureen Macato added 16 points as the Rams used a big third quarter to down the Lynx.

Macato made three 3-pointers and had 10 points in the third quarter as the Rams went on a 16-5 run to take a 42-30 lead heading into the fourth.

Shameah Jones led Dimond with 15 points, and teammate Dejha Canty scored 12.

Chugiak (Alaska) 52, Sunrise Mountain 41 — Tayaa Pratt had 13 points for the Miners in their loss to the Mustangs.

Anna Ingraham finished with 11 points, and Ashlynn Burgess added 10 points for Chugiak, which led 32-18 at halftime.

Spanish Springs 34, Needles 31 — Jane Antone finished with 10 points in the Mustangs’ loss to the Cougars.

Brenna Chavez added nine points for Needles, which used a 13-4 run in the third quarter to get back in the game after trailing 23-13 at halftime.

Tabbatha Reyes made three 3-pointers and led Spanish Springs with nine points.

Coronado 52, Buena (Calif.) 45 — Samantha Green dropped in 21 points, and the Cougars rallied to defeat the Bulldogs.

Coronado, which trailed 28-22 at halftime, closed the game on a 14-4 run. Green gave the Cougars a 44-42 lead when she converted inside off a pass from Dajah Washington with 3:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. Green then finished after Coronado broke the Bulldogs’ full-court press to put the Cougars on top 48-44 with 2:20 left to play.

The Cougars led 48-45 and spread the court when Karlie Thorn caught the ball in the high post and drove to the basket to make it 50-45 with 1:13 to go. Thorn finished with eight points.

Amy Jameson led Buena with 10 points.

Westchester (Calif.) 54, Cheyenne 46 — Bria Buchanan had 17 points, but the Desert Shields were outscored 14-5 in the fourth quarter and lost to the Comets.

Kaylan Finley and Koreyl Godbolt each finished with 10 points for Cheyenne. The Desert Shields went on a 19-8 run to snag a 41-40 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Ijeoma Anugwom dropped in a game-high 28 points to lead Westchester.

Durango 72, Dimond (Alaska) 54 — Jazmin Chavez had 23 points, and Brittany Romo added 21 points as the Trailblazers topped the Lynx.

Romo had 13 points in the first half to help Durango take a 40-28 lead at the break before Chavez took over, scoring 17 of her team’s 32 second-half points.

Vonie Thomas finished with 11 points, and teammate Danielle Smith scored 10 for Durango.

Dejha Canty led Dimond with 18 points.

Spring Valley 72, Del Sol 18 — Kayla Harris had 18 of her 23 points in the first half, and the Grizzlies beat the Dragons.

Essence Booker added 18 points for Spring Valley.

Azhwalaee Oliver had seven points to lead Del Sol, which was held to two points in the second half.

Santa Fe Christian (Calif.) 76, Bonanza 59 — Powers scored 26 points in the Bengals’ loss to the Eagles.

Savage added 18 points and made five of Bonanza’s 10 3-pointers.

The Bengals trailed 39-30 at halftime before Santa Fe Christian used a 26-6 run in the third quarter to pull away.

Franke finished with 30 points and scored 16 in the decisive third quarter. Cubel had 15 points, and Emma Dudley scored 11 for the Eagles.

Cimarron-Memorial 42, Shadow Ridge 15 — Zaquae Downton had 11 points as the Spartans shut down the Mustangs.

Niara Smith added nine points for Cimarron, which led 20-4 at halftime.

Assana King led Shadow Ridge with six points.

Coronado 65, Chugiak (Alaska) 61 — Green had 17 points, and the Cougars overcame a slow start to beat the Mustangs.

Kayla Watterson finished with 14 points, and Thorn added 12 for Coronado, which trailed 14-7 after the first quarter.

Ashlynn Burgess led Chugiak with 16 points, and teammate Nicole Pinckney scored 13. Julia Turner supplied 12 points for the Mustangs, who were 4-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Westchester (Calif.) 62, Coral Academy 7 — Anugwom had 21 points as the Comets overwhelmed the Falcons.

Taylor Austin, Alessandra Ponce and Olivia Ponce each had two points for Coral Academy.

Chaparral 55, Durango 21 — Taij Criss-Felton dropped in 17 points, and Marcia Hawkins had 16 points as the Cowboys stunned the Trailblazers.

Alexis Vanstory added 13 points for Chaparral, which led 38-8 at halftime.

Chavez scored all of Durango’s points in the first half and finished with eight points.

Spanish Springs 32, Del Sol 18 — Oliver had 13 points in the Dragons’ loss to the Cougars.

Ireland Bennett had eight points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Spanish Springs, which used a 10-3 run in the second quarter to take control.
