Gator Winter Classic: Liberty, Spring Valley advance to Diamond bracket semis

Liberty’s girls basketball team went on a 13-0 run to start the game Friday night en route to a 62-20 victory over Foothill in the Diamond bracket quarterfinals of the Gator Winter Classic at Green Valley.

Rae Burrell, a Foothill transfer, led Liberty with 13 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists. The Tennessee-bound senior was 5-for-8 shooting from the field against her former team.

Liberty was one of two local teams to advance to the Gator Winter Classic’s semifinals, along with Spring Valley. The two could meet in the Diamond bracket final should they win their semifinal Saturday. The tournament had 33 teams.

Dre’una Edwards, who is committed to Utah, added 14 points, and Jahnae Nickels scored nine for Liberty, which didn’t allow a field goal until Laurel Rockwood’s layup with 3:10 to go in the first quarter.

Rockwood scored 10 points for Foothill.

Spring Valley 75, Spanish Springs 57 — Kayla Harris scored 20 of her game-high 36 points in the second half to help the Grizzlies put away the Cougars in the Diamond bracket quarterfinals.

Harris also went 8-for-8 from the line.

Essence Booker and Jalynn Webster each scored 11, and Garrisen Freeman had 10 points for Spring Valley, which exploded for a 25-9 third quarter to pull away.

Autumn Wadsworth and Lauryn Dressler scored 12 apiece for Spanish Springs.

Flagstaff (Ariz.) 65, Coronado 44 — Haley Tyrell had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, but the Cougars were overwhelmed by the Eagles in the Diamond bracket quarterfinals.

Teagan Varrati had nine points, and Aeryn Hawkins scored seven for Coronado, which gave up 12 3-pointers and trailed 34-23 at halftime.

Monique Ware scored 17 of her game-high 30 points in second half to lead Flagstaff.

Cimarron-Memorial 55, Green Valley 44 — Tasia Moore had 21 points, 10 rebounds and 13 steals, and the Spartans forced 24 turnovers in their win over the Gators in the Gold bracket quarterfinals.

Elise Young added 16 points for Cimarron, which trailed 24-23 at halftime. Cimarron outscored Green Valley 16-9 in the third quarter to pull away.

Temerity Bauer led Green Valley with 18 points. Rian Anderson added nine points and 13 rebounds for the Gators.

Moapa Valley 38, Dixie (Utah) 31 — Lainey Cornwall had 16 points to power the Pirates by the Flyers in the Gold bracket quarterfinals.

Shelbi Walker contributed eight points for Moapa Valley, which held Dixie scoreless in the second quarter to take a 20-10 halftime lead.

Aisea Fakatoumafi had 13 points for Dixie.

Casteel (Ariz.) 77, Durango 33 — Analiyah Matthews led the Trailblazers with 12 points in their loss to the Colts in the Gold bracket quarterfinals.

Dar’Juanah Harris had seven points for Durango.

Daeja Johnson led four double-figure scorers with 18 points.

Fountain Valley (Calif.) 37, Silverado 21 — Jasmine Waugh scored eight points in the Skyhawks’ loss to the Barons in the Silver bracket quarterfinals.

Monet Oncu led Fountain Valley with 11 points.

Rancho 55, Kingsburg (Calif.) 45 — Kyndal Ricks led three double-figure scorers with 16 points in the Rams’ win over the Vikings in the Silver bracket quarterfinals.

Lea Williams had 15 points, and Taylor DeGourville scored 13 for Rancho, which led 29-22 at halftime.

Maddy Reed scored a game-high 30 points for Kingsburg in a losing effort.

Chaparral 63, Virgin Valley 52 — Riahana Davis scored a game-high 24 points to rally the Cowboys from a 31-29 halftime deficit and defeat the Bulldogs in the Silver bracket quarterfinals.

Emani White had 19 points, and Alexandria White scored 11 for Chaparral, which hit eight 3-pointers.

Taylor Barnum led Virgin Valley with 18 points, and teammate Alexis Boatright scored 12.

Clark 46, Boulder City 40 — Marieka Dent led all scorers with 17 points, and the Chargers went 14-for-18 from the free-throw line in their win over the Eagles in the Silver bracket quarterfinals.

Al’ynnay Godfrey added nine points, and Justice Unga scored six for Clark, which led 29-27 after three quarters.

Madison Manns (11 points), Keely Alexander (10 points) and Setia Cox (eight points) led Boulder City.

Clark 60, Needles 30 — Dent poured in 22 points in the Chargers’ win over the Mustangs in a Silver bracket game.

Rockelle Ramsey had 13 points, and Adia Williams and Godfrey each scored 10 for Clark.

Marie Mills had 15 points for Needles.

Yerington 57, Del Sol 31 — Jazmine Simpson scored 11 points in the Dragons’ loss to the Lions in the Bronze bracket quarterfinals.

CharLeyanse Howard had nine points, and Lajaei West scored eight for Del Sol.

Jayla Tolliver scored 13 points to lead Yerington.

Las Vegas 48, Tech 41 — Alexiz Jenkins led a balanced attack with 11 points as the Wildcats held off the Roadrunners in the Bronze bracket quarterfinals.

Xeda Regala had 10 points for Las Vegas, which led 25-18 at halftime.

Makenna Faught had 19 points, and Cassandra Banchich had 12 points for Tech.

Valley 45, Gardena (Calif.) 38 — Jeuzel Pollins scored 12 of her game-high 20 points to rally the Vikings past the Panthers in the Bronze bracket quarterfinals.

Kiara Brown and Krystal Carter each scored eight for Valley, which trailed 25-16 at halftime.

Brandy Castaneda had 18 points for Gardena.

Moapa Valley 45, South Anchorage (Alaska) 36 — Cornwall led all scorers with 20 points to help the Pirates defeat the Wolverines in pool play.

Kaitlyn Anderson had 12 points for Moapa Valley, which made 12 of 16 free throws.

Lily Weimann led South Anchorage with 12 points.

Durango 61, Chaparral 54 — Matthews scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Trailblazers past the Cowboys in overtime in pool play.

Harris added 14 points, and Mahoganey Sua and Lindiana Bojku each scored eight for Durango, which outscorer Chaparral 9-2 in overtime.

Emani White led Chaparral with 15 points. Brizeida Mora had 11 points, and Riahana Davis notched 10 points for the Cowboys.

Liberty 69, Gardena (Calif.) 24 — Dre’una Edwards led 11 scorers with 14 points in the Patriots’ victory over the Panthers in pool play.

Leilani Padilla had 10 points, Trinity Vasquez had nine points, and London Pavlica and Sydnie Tuioti-Mariner each scored eight for Liberty.

Kaylynn Kawate led Gardena with 11 points.

Fort Pierce Central (Fla.) 55, Rancho 25 — Saipress Jones scored eight points in the Rams’ loss to the Cobras in pool play.

Kyndal Ricks had six points for Rancho, which fell behind 20-6 after the first quarter.

Denvia Morgan led Fort Pierce Central with 18 points.
