GIRLS BASKETBALL: Centennial falls to nation’s No. 1 team in Virginia

Ashley Owusu scored 20 points, and Paul VI (Virginia) overcame an early deficit to defeat Centennial’s girls basketball team 66-59 on Saturday in the Art Turner Memorial in Fairfax, Virginia.
Centennial led 19-8 after one quarter and 32-28 at the half, before the Panthers, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, took a 45-41 lead after three quarters.
The Bulldogs retook the lead, but Paul IV went ahead with 4:41 to go and held on for the win.
Justice Ethridge led Centennial, ranked No. 8 in the nation, with 14 points. Samantha Thomas added 12 points for the Bulldogs, and teammate Pam Wilmore scored 11.
Honesty Scott-Grayson added 15 points for the Panthers.
Faith Lutheran 52, Desert Pines 33 — At Desert Pines, Isabel Thornton and Bryanna Neagle each had 10 points to help the Crusaders top the Jaguars.
See’Airra Evans-Collins had 19 points, 11 rebounds and five steals for Desert Pines.
Moapa Valley 59, West Wendover 39 — At Lake Mead, Shelbi Walker finished with 19 points, and the Pirates defeated the Wolverines in the championship game of the Lake Mead Holiday Classic.
Lainey Cornwall and Kinlee Marshall each had nine points for Moapa Valley, which opened the game on a 15-5 run and led 48-23 after three quarters.
Sydney Reamer had a game-high 20 points to lead West Wendover, and teammate Anahi Esparza scored 11.
Cheyenne 60, Calvary Chapel 14 — At Lake Mead, Germaine White scored 15 points, and the Desert Shields routed the Lions in the third-place game at the Lake Mead Holiday Classic.
Kiara Haley added 11 points for Cheyenne, which led 28-6 at halftime.
Sara Hernandez led Calvary Chapel with six points.
Clark 54, Lake Mead 32 — At Lake Mead, Adia Williams had 17 points, and Haley Daniels scored 15 to lead the Chargers past the Eagles at the Lake Mead Holiday Classic.
Aaliyah Perkins finished with 10 points for Lake Mead, which got as close as 39-28 after outscoring Clark 18-4 in the third quarter.
Lincoln County 45, Boulder City 37 — At Lake Mead, Kristal Jackson and Kailey Kelley each scored 11 points in the Lynx’s victory over the Eagles at the Lake Mead Holiday Classic.
Brynlee Wadsworth added nine points for Lincoln County, which pulled away in the second half after leading 24-23 at halftime.
Keely Alexander led Boulder City with 10 points.
Lincoln County 57, Laughlin 21 — At Lake Mead, Kelley had a game-high 16 points to lead the Lynx past the Cougars at the Lake Mead Holiday Classic.
Teresa Chapa led Laughlin with eight points.
The Meadows 32, Calvary Christian (California) 26 — At Lake Mead, Marcella Peek had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Mustangs past the Lions at the Lake Mead Holiday Classic.
Peek was named to the all-tournament team.
Tahsin Najmi had eight points, six rebounds and two assists, and Talia Steinwald added five points and 13 rebounds for The Meadows, which led 20-11 at halftime.
Green Valley 57, Dixie (Utah) 52 — At St. George, Utah, Amy Amezcua and Temerity Bauer each scored 16 points to power the Gators over the Flyers in the Dixie Tournament.
Samara Miller added 12 points for Green Valley.
Kelsea Barker scored 11 for Dixie.
Century (Idaho) 64, Green Valley 22 — At St. George, Utah, the Diamondbacks opened the game on an 18-4 run and rolled past the Gators in the Dixie Tournament.
Miller led Green Valley with seven points.
Pahrump Valley 45, Mohave (Ariz.) 38 — At Mohave Valley, Ariz., the Trojans erased a 22-21 halftime deficit and downed the Thunderbirds in the River Valley Shootout.
