Lund girls take top awards in Class 1A Southern League basketball

Lund girls basketball coach Shane Boren laughed Tuesday when asked what it felt like to have his team take the top two awards in the Class 1A Southern League.

“I’d trade them in a heartbeat for a state title,” he said.

Lund (20-4) went 9-0 in league during the regular season but lost to league foe Pahranagat Valley 52-42 in the 1A state title game Saturday at the Orleans Arena.

Boren was named league Coach of the Year, and senior guard Keisha Stewart took Most Valuable Player.

Lund also had Katie Whipple named to the first team, Ale Vega and Kara Rimington to the second team and Melynda Boren and Lyndsey Ivins to the honorable-mention squad.

“I was extremely pleased with the season we had and the girls we had,” Shane Boren said. “I likened it to a dream season, where everything falls into place.

“It speaks a lot for the team atmosphere that we had six players (all-league). We were the definition of a team, I thought.”

The first team is comprised of Whipple, Pahranagat Valley’s Mary Higbee, Halie Lewis and Dakota Day and Round Mountain’s Tana Berg.

The second team is comprised of Beatty’s Autumn Spicer and Nichole Stucker, Lund’s Ale Vega and Kara Rimington and Round Mountain’s Kattrena Akers.
