ROUNDUP: Centennial tops ranked Virginia team in girls basketball tournament

Deanna Daniels rebounded her own missed free throw with six seconds left and helped Centennial’s girls basketball team run out the clock Friday for a 60-57 win over 19th-ranked Oak Hill (Va.) Academy in the quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.

Centennial had pulled the rest of its players back to defend a potential game-tying shot, but Daniels grabbed her own miss and preserved the win.

Johnna Brown had 18 points and 12 rebounds, Shannon Brown 14 points and Alexis Byrd 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Shylanda Saunders led Oak Hill, ranked 19th by USA Today, with 13 points.

Bishop Gorman 69, Lynwood (Calif.) 55 — At the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Aaryn Ellenberg led four Gaels in double-figure scoring with 24 points as Gorman moved into the semifinals.

Yahindra Edwards added 16 points for the Gaels, who saw their 13-point halftime lead whittled to five before pulling away.
Chelsie Pitt scored 13 points and Dannielle Diamant 10 for Gorman.

West Wendover 57, Tabiona (Utah) 22 — At West Wendover, Danika Sharp made 17 of 20 free throws and totaled 34 points to lead the Wolverines past Tabiona.

The Wolverines outscored Tabiona 17-2 in the second quarter and allowed 12 points in the final three quarters.

In the Rock Holiday Classic at Henderson International:
Laughlin 43, Indian Springs 27 — Ariana Hardy scored 16 points to lead the Cougars to the win in the championship game.

Elisa Daniels added 12 points for Laughlin.

Karys Melgoza led Indian Springs with 12 points.

Hardy was named the tourrnament Most Valuable Player. Laughlin’s Alysia Deyempert and Brittany Chase also made the all-tournament team along with Indian Springs’ Tina Traster and Melgoza, Calvary Chapel’s Sammie Mann and Brittany Huff of Henderson International.

Calvary Chapel 39, Henderson International 14 — The Lions took a 17-1 halftime lead and cruised to the win in the consolation game.

Mann had 21 points for Calvary Chapel.

Lauren Mushkin led the Wolverines with eight points.

Indian Springs 22, Henderson International 18 — Traster had 10 points to lead the Thunderbirds.

Huff scored eight for the Wolverines.

Laughlin 35, Calvary Chapel 22 — Chase had 14 points to lead the Cougars over the Lions.

Mann led Calvary Chapel with 12 points.

Legacy and Canyon Springs couldn’t keep up in the Class 4A girls basketball state semifinals. The Southern Region representatives in 3A also were eliminated.
