Shadow Ridge helps Cheyenne make girls basketball playoffs

Cheyenne’s girls entered Thursday needing a minor miracle to make the basketball playoffs.

The Desert Shields needed to win at Mojave and have Shadow Ridge upset Cimarron-Memorial to advance to the postseason.

And considering Shadow Ridge had lost 13 straight games, prospects looked bleak.

Now the Desert Shields are getting ready for a Sunset Region quarterfinal game at Bishop Gorman.

Cheyenne’s 56-42 win at Mojave and Shadow Ridge’s first win since Dec. 23 pushed the Desert Shields into and Mojave out of the playoffs.

Each of the four Southern Nevada Class 4A leagues has its playoff teams determined entering Friday’s action, but two teams in the Southwest and Northeast leagues still could trade places.

In the Northwest League, Centennial (14-0) is the No. 1 seed, followed by Palo Verde (11-3), Legacy (8-6) and Cheyenne (6-8).

Cheyenne and Mojave tied for fourth place and split their regular-season matchups.

Cheyenne won the tiebreaker on beaten opponents points, with its win over Legacy on Jan. 9 the determining factor. Mojave didn’t win a game against the league’s top three teams.

In the Southwest, Bonanza can wrap up the No. 2 seed behind Bishop Gorman if it beats Sierra Vista on Friday. If Bonanza loses, Durango will claim the No. 2 spot, leaving Bonanza with the No. 3 seed. Sierra Vista is the No. 4 seed.

Sunset Region Quarterfinal Pairings:
Cheyenne at Bishop Gorman
Legacy at Bonanza or Durango
Bonanza or Durango at Palo Verde
Sierra Vista at Centennial

SUNRISE REGION

Green Valley’s win over Silverado on Thursday gave the Gators a perfect league mark for the second straight year and the Southeast League’s No. 1 seed for the playoffs.

Silverado (12-2) is the No. 2 seed, followed by Liberty (10-4) and Coronado (7-7).

The Northeast League still has a little business to tidy up Friday.

The top two teams — Desert Pines and Valley — have been determined, but the third and fourth seeds could change.

Las Vegas is currently in third place and Eldorado fourth. If the Sundevils upset Desert Pines, Eldorado would move into the No. 3 spot and drop Las Vegas to No. 4. A Desert Pines win keeps Las Vegas as the third seed.

Sunrise Region Quarterfinal Pairings:

Eldorado or Las Vegas at Green Valley
Eldorado or Las Vegas at Silverado
Liberty at Valley
Coronado at Desert Pines

CLASS 2A

Needles’ win over Mountain View on Thursday cleared up the 2A Southern League picture a bit.

The Saints are locked into the No. 3 seed, with White Pine having clinched the No. 4.

Needles and Lincoln County will decide the top spot tonight when they meet at Needles. The winner gets the No. 1 seed, the loser the No. 2.

Lincoln County won the first meeting between the teams, giving it the edge if it wins Friday’s game.

If Needles wins, the Mustangs will finish league play at 13-1, and with two losses, Lincoln County couldn’t tie Needles for the top spot.
