VEGAS INVITATIONAL: Clark girls coach fortunate Floyd gave up pom-poms

Three years ago, Clark girls basketball player Bobbi Floyd manned the sidelines.

It wasn’t that the lanky forward was short on talent. She just chose to spend her time cheerleadering.

After Floyd’s successful freshman season last year, Clark coach Mike Moulchin hasn’t shied away in his approval of her decision.

“I’m so glad she put the pom-poms down,” Moulchin said with a laugh. “Bobbi’s progression has been great. She’s a phenomenal player, a great kid, and she’s only going to get better. The players around her really help set the table.”

Floyd had 15 points, 15 rebounds and three steals Thursday, as the Chargers bolted to a 37-16 victory over Pahrump Valley in a consolation game the Vegas Invitational at Mountain View.

“You know, we’re a young team,” Moulchin said. “We have some nights where we don’t find the net, and we have some nights where we do. It’s my third year here, and it seems like it’s a different team every year. But these girls are really sticking and they’re starting to get it.”

Clark (3-6) held the Trojans to only three points in the middle two quarters.

“We looked for our cutters and gave everyone a chance to share the ball,” Floyd said. “This gives us a boost of confidence. We have the mentality that we can be better than we were last year.”

It took Pahrump more than five minutes to hit its first basket, as the Chargers stormed to a 9-2 advantage to open the game. Clark forced 14 first-half turnovers.

Pahrump shot 21 percent (3 of 14) from the field in the first half and was outscored 14-1 in the second quarter. Floyd scored nine points in the quarter, as the Trojans failed to find any sort of offensive rhythm.

Freshman guard Karlicia Stroughter had nine points and two steals for the Chargers, and teammate Cequadva Belser added eight points. Mary Taumoefolau had 10 rebounds for Clark.

Nicole Terry led Pahrump (3-10) with six points.
