Basic displays powerful offense in rout

Basic needed two of their greatest offensive threats for just two quarters in its season opener Friday night.
After jumping out to a 41-0 halftime lead on the heels of senior quarterback Jaylen Rose’s two touchdown passes to wide receiver Devonte Boyd, Wolves coach Jeff Cahil sat the duo for the remainder of the game.
Rose’s second TD pass came as the half expired, capping a drive that included a 54-yard gain on third-and-29 — a completion to junior Antraye Johnson.
“We came out and jumped on them early,” Cahil said. “We really dictated the pace of the game.
Jaylen did a great job, and Devonte’s a great leader. We’re obviously going to count on him. And Jaylen did a great job getting the ball to him.”
While Basic’s offense produced 255 total yards in the first half — 217 through the air and 38 on the ground — its defense proved equally impressive, holding the Rams to just four yards of total offense in the first half and 66 for the game.
The Wolves’ first punt didn’t come until the 6:00 mark in the third quarter, as Rancho did little to stop Basic’s powerful offense.
For Basic, Rose was 14-for-20 for 217 yards passing. Boyd caught seven passes for 90 yards, while scoring two touchdowns.
Johnson started Basic’s high-scoring night by returning the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. He finished the night with three TDs — the other two coming on a pair of 1-yard runs.
Rancho scored its touchdowns on a 6-yard pass from Maxwell Luarca to Tommy Perkins, and a 22-yard fumble recovery that Liam McIntyre scooped up and ran into the endzone.
