Boulder City runs over Chaparral, earns final Sunrise playoff spot

Boulder City was playing in a must-win game Thursday at Chaparral.

The winner of the game would get the final postseason berth from the Division I-A Sunrise League.

The Eagles knew ball-control would be key, so they executed accordingly.

Boulder City turned a pair of long scoring drives into points, and the Eagles ended Chaparral’s season with a 14-8 victory.

It was the three-headed monster for Boulder City that did the damage - Xavier Steel, Brooks Roe and Nelson Van Diest. The three combined for 256 yards.

From the opening quarter Boulder City owned time of possession, having the ball for more than 10 minutes.

The Eagles finally broke the scoreless game and took an 8-0 lead on a 46-yard drive, which was capped by an eight-yard run by Roe.

Chaparral (3-6, 1-4 Sunrise) quickly answered thanks to a botched onside kick. The Cowboys traveled 44 yards for the tying score, a nine-yard run by Richard Hernandez.

Boulder City, which gained 189 yards in the first half, took its first possession of the second half to the endzone. The Eagles went 90 yards in 15 plays. Trenton Carmell’s one-yard plunge gave them a six-point lead.

The Eagles’ defense frustrated Chaparral quarterback Jerome Williamson the rest of the night. Williamson, who opened the game with three straight completions, ended the night throwing eight straight incompletions.

Williamson finished with 70 yards passing, and the Cowboys managed just 61 yards on the ground.

Steel led the Eagles (4-5, 2-4 Sunrise) with 93 yards on 13 carries, while Roe added 86 yards and VanDiest 77 more.
