COACHING CHANGES: Coronado football looks for stability

New Coronado football coach Todd Stratton doesn’t think he has to gain his players’ trust only because of the circumstances surrounding former coach John Mannion’s departure.
Stratton also is the Cougars’ third coach in three seasons.
“When you have that kind of turnover, regardless of why, the kids are a little leery,” Stratton said.
But Stratton, 45, said Coronado’s program is moving in a positive direction.
The former Basic assistant was hired April 24 to replace Mannion, who hasn’t been employed in the Clark County School District since May 8.
Mannion, 50, has been at the center of a district investigation into missing funds raised by Coronado football players.
“I’m proud of the kids,” Stratton said. “Everybody’s just moved on. Whatever happened is between coach Mannion and the administration.”
Stratton said he will install a spread offense and a 4-3 defense with a Cover 2 scheme in the secondary.
He served as a UNLV graduate assistant (1988-89), quarterbacks coach at Southern Utah (1990) and offensive coordinator at Citrus College (1991-92) with stints at Chaparral, Boulder City and Basic.
Stratton, who has a son and daughter attending Coronado, said he was “always interested in the Coronado job.”
“I’m very excited,” he said. “It’s a dream come true for me.”
