Las Vegas High's Trevor Swenson’s final pass with four seconds remaining fell incomplete, ending a comeback attempt by the No. 7 Wildcats (1-1) as they fell 35-28 to Rancho Verde (Calif.).
Andrew Moreland scored on a 5-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to pull Las Vegas within 35-28. The Wildcats forced a turnover on downs and drove into scoring range, but Swenson couldn’t connect with Aaron Zanin-Banks on their final play.
Swenson threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns, including a 4-yard TD pass to Joshua Mayfield just before halftime.
Keshawn Slaughter led Rancho Verde with 145 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, including a 35-yard run late in the third quarter to make it 35-21. Sophomore QB Sherrion Jones also contributed with 119 yards and two touchdowns.
