FIELDER’S CHOICES: All-name team has Humble beginning

Southern Nevada has enough high school football talent to create an all-star team filled with future college players.

But it might be more fun to put together a local all-name team. Eat your heart out, Mr. Public Address Announcer.

The center could be Palo Verde’s Jacob Humble, who has the best name ever for a lineman.

Humble would snap the ball to Shadow Ridge quarterback J Henderson, who would be protected by Sunrise Mountain tackle H Venerable.

Henderson’s favorite target would be Del Sol receiver Romance Oliver, who is surely the smoothest route runner in town.

The secondary would be conducted by Chaparral defensive back Maistro Bobo-Pyels.

Those guys happen to be pretty good players, in addition to having cool names, which is why they get shout-outs. Some of them are playing in games I’m picking Friday.

Foothill at Canyon Springs

San Diego State fans will want to watch this game, which pits a pair of future Aztecs against each other in Foothill receiver/safety Tyler Morris and Canyon Springs running back Donnel Pumphrey.

Pumphrey is dynamic, but Morris has a slightly deeper supporting cast. … Foothill by 4.

Desert Oasis at Arbor View

The Aggies have had to reload quickly in the backfield, but their vaunted rushing attack should be just fine behind one of the state’s most gifted and experienced offensive lines.

Expect Arbor View to control the line of scrimmage all night. … Arbor View by 15½.

Cheyenne at Cimarron-Memorial

The Duel in the Desert is one of the state’s most historic rivalries. Don’t let anyone tell you the game has lost luster because the teams are now in different leagues.

Cheyenne won last year’s game in overtime, and that was when Cimarron had one of the state’s best running backs in DeMaryae Williams.

Cheyenne’s Myloe Lewis is one of the state’s best this year. Lewis gashed a solid Desert Pines defense for 354 yards rushing last week. That’s hard to do even on Madden. … Cheyenne by 1.

Palo Verde at Centennial

Centennial had Palo Verde up against the ropes in last year’s Sunset Region semifinals before the Panthers escaped with a 23-20 victory, dealing the Bulldogs a heartbreaker that will be hard to shake.

And that might be the problem. Centennial will have difficulty blocking out emotion to execute against a Palo Verde team that is the picture of execution in recent years.

The Panthers were spotty offensively in the Sollenberger Classic, but they’ll continue to ride defense past most local teams. … Palo Verde by 3.

Durango at Bonanza

Bonanza has strong-armed Brett Doyle at quarterback and state champion sprinter Jayveon Taylor at running back. Durango has a pair of future college running backs in Marcus Williams and Arie McQuaig.

If my 1-900 service were set up, taking the over on the total of 68 would be my lead-pipe lock of the summer. For now, you’ll have to settle for my play on the Trailblazers. … Durango by 11½.

Laughlin at The Meadows

The Cougars are my Division III Southern League dark horse, but my dark horses usually get put out to pasture by Week 4.

Laughlin has size, talent and experience. The Meadows has to replace one of the most productive quarterbacks in state history, but coach Frank DeSantis has done it before. … The Meadows by 8.
